MBA here, I work in Project Management in O&G and do use quite a lot of what I learned. Possibly moving to one of the big 4 consulting firms (currently in interview process with 2 of them) and I expect that would be 100% MBA "stuff"

MBA here also. At the very least it’s a differentiator when job hunting or looking for a promotion. I think Data analytics is a great opportunity right now. You can find some great examples in telecom, entertainment and advertising that show how the power of big data / data science are driving the industry.

I use mine all the time. At a minimum, once the financials start being discussed I believe that we have to at least have a sense of what’s going on, even if we don’t understand all of the specifics. Otherwise, it’s a real hindrance in dealing with senior management. Once the course work is done, I’d suggest that she set up an informational interview with the finance department wherever she works, premises on “I want to understand this part of the business better.” Then she should find some aspect of the business that she can teach the finance department about. After a Few of those exchanges, she’ll be the go-to gal for finance, and then #profit

Sub'd, have considered getting my MBA since I am in a declining industry and don't see it lasting another 20 years. I wouldn't need many courses either.

Was a Senior Manager working for a large Consumer Electronics audio company. Led our US and Latin American field organization for 7 years and leveraged a great deal of finance and business math knowledge. Fortunately the org taught me the framework for how they wanted us to look at data. It came pretty quickly although I don’t believe it had anything to do with my education, I studied and studied the arithematic until I understood. I now manage key global projects and deliver all high priority presentations for the same firm. Have a BS in Management, Grad Cert from Berkeley in Org Agility and Grad Cert from Columbia in Effective Global Leadership. I think fondly of my time in school and it certainly has helped me get my roles but I leverage very little, if any in my day to day work. I’m on board with @JeffW, it is a differentiator and something she will be proud of.

One here as well. My MBA opened doors in hospital administration that my clinical degree couldn’t. Payed for itself right away.

MBA here as well. It has opened doors, created opportunities and given a little more edge when looking at positions. It used to be a bachelors that was necessary to get in the door, now an MBA has become the norm. I’m sure PhD is soon to be the new norm.

I completed my MBA in 2012. In the first job I took right out of graduate school, I used the hard skills attained in my MBA program everyday. Present value calculations, ROI analysis, market analysis, etc.. But these were all geared more towards an analyst position. When I moved on from that job and took a managerial role in a more career oriented path I feel like the soft skills were more highly valued. However, I still credit the reason that I got my current job to the fact that I went to high school with the HR recruiter. I won't deny that the skills and knowledge I acquired in my MBA program have come in handy, yet I firmly believe that the connections and relationships that you make and the determination to succeed and hard work will get you further in life than any degree will.

so she is a career switcher

my wife is also an educator. she was a very successful high school business teacher prior to us relocating to PA and then quickly learned that teaching jobs here are tough to get unless you want to teach the hood kids and be bashed and threatened daily. she has her M. ed and finishes her MBA with a concentration in data analytics I may. she wants to do business process (change management) or corporate learning and development . She has started applying for for jobs but we need to figure out how to beat the recruiting softwares that scrub for keywords and salaries in resumes so that she can at least get an interview after a human reviews her resume.

her resume is heavier in the education aspect of her schooling, however, there has got to be a way where a new MBA has a bit more leverage than a brand new candidate with a bachelor's and no real work experience in the workforce yet.

heck me too. aviation is great and depending on where you are it can be a struggle. the amount of responsibility that we carry on our shoulders and the pay dont typically align.

fun fact: a pilot accepts an airplane and takes passengers from point A to B and his obligations are over upon landing. a tech replaces a flap or brakes or an actuator somewhere on that aircraft and his installation is owned for life until the next guy replaces it or its removed from service. crazy

I don't have my MBA. I've considered it but I'm currently debt free other than our home which we pay extra on. I work in supply chain and I haven't seen enough evidence to show that an MBA will pay for itself in my field. My company won't pay for any of it either.

If i thought it would pay for itself in 3-4 years I would consider it more seriously.

I also work in the supply chain field. A degree would have absolutely no bearing on what I do. (I have no degree at all.)

I have some colleagues with MBA's. In some cases it appears to have helped them career wise and in other cases it has not. I have no doubt it would only help me, not hurt me, at least on paper. The question is whether or not it's worth going $20-40K in debt. If I invested $40K in the market over the next 20 years would that have a higher return than a potential pay raise?

At least in my industry, experience trumps education by a huge margin. Though there are obviously fields where you have to have a degree, a college education just isn’t as valuable as it used to be. I have currently three guys with degrees working under me, and have had a half dozen others in the past.

It’s pretty disheartening when I get people with college degrees applying for my warehouse jobs. I have a guy who graduated two years ago, still driving a forklift for me. Makes me worry about my kids honestly. I have one who’s a junior in college now, and another graduating high school in a few months.

I’ve tried to really stress to them that they need to find fields where the degree is going to make a difference. They are both getting education degrees, so while they will both likely be able to find work, it’s going to take a very long time to get a return on the cost. I’m very proud of them, but they certainly aren’t going to make a ton of money.

Sorry for jacking your thread @ardnutoz .

I work closely with our Supply Chain and a lot of those folks have received credentials specifically for Supply Chain. I think Penn State has an online course you can take. Might be something to check out. When I see our manager I will ask him what the course is called. It is like a CPA but for SP

We are nearing the point where a Bachelor's degree is now equivalent to a H.S diploma. In order to stand out many people are getting MBA's for jobs that really are not necessary. I know a guy who went got his MBA from the University of Tennessee(very good program) and said he learned very little. He did it just so he could add that to his resume.

Just finished my bachelors program and landed a job as a project engineer for one of the larger mechanical contractors in so cal. I used to live in central Tennessee and miss it like crazy (trying to re-locate back). My drive to get my Masters in Construction Management is so that I can gain that title on the resume and have it open job opportunities across the board.

Currently in my second semester for my MBA. Going to get my associates at a community college and then transfer to a state University. So much cheaper and easier this way.

fortunately for us during our relocation she ended up working at a local university so the MBA is free to her. the ROI will be in much higher income in exchange for the time spent in class.

To be fair, I don't think I would have gotten my MBA if my employer didn't pay for it. I went to a tier 1 program (UT Austin) and that was $90k. No freaking way I'd pay that out of pocket myself, though I had classmates who did.
