This guy made a very dumb mistake and it almost cost him his life. He is luck to be alive. You have to make dam sure that the buck is dead before even thinking about approaching and moving the deer. The deer got em good.

Hence my signature line below applies..

“If your gonna be dumb, you better be dam tough”.

I believe this is why you "pay the insurance" as Peter Hathaway Capstick called it. One more into the vitals just to make sure the critter is dead.

Is this what it would look like if Connor @Thegr8punkin went deer hunting?

I have a habit of poking an animal in the open eye with the muzzle, with my booger picker ready on the bang switch. That’s if the eyes are open, and no sign of breathing from further back.

    Damn that brings back memories.

My Dad was always a big time hunter, which in turn made me one until moving to CO. Last hunt was 09’.
Anyway, my Dad is a big “do it by the book” kind of man. He always told me after downing an animal to give it a few minutes, then approach slowly and look for entry wounds, if it’s a horned animal step on the antlers, cut the throat to ensure animal is dead.

One season my Dad took a rather long shot with his ol’ Springfield 30-06 and thought he went over the bucks shoulder, but the deer dropped. We were a little surprised, to be honest.
It took a while to hike over to the animal. When we approached, we couldn’t find an entry or exit wound. So we were more alert. He stepped on his antlers and started to cut the throat and holy shit, it wasn’t dead!!!! Lucky my Dad and uncle were on the antlers and made quick work of killing the deer. After we were sure the animal was dead, upon further inspection there was a bullet hole at the base of his antlers. The damn deer was knocked out!!!

My Dad turned and looked at me and said “that’s exactly why you make sure the animal is dead. No damn photos with your rifle in the antlers and stuff like that. It can cost your life.”

    By God, he was right.

You cut your head open ONE time... then every time someone else does it it's pulling a punkin....

But ya that would probably be my luck. Altough, I've been lucky enough to not get crushed by a car yet... so I guess that should say someting of my luck. But I think punkin had it out for me after I tore it apart.... and punkins motor as well.... huh... where is the wood at

Reminds me of an episode when I was a kid in Montana. When the ground was frozen we'd run down Coyote's in the wheat stubble fields using the old Dodge Ramcharger and a 12ga using BB's hanging out the window. We'd use the shotgun so it would save the pelt, back then we were getting up to $180 a pelt, so you didn't want any sort of holes etc. We'd see them in the field and take off across the snowy fields full throttle until we could get up next to them and pop them dead run. (it wasn't all that easy, they'd zig zag, stop and track back etc, we put the ramcharger on it's side one day in a snow bank when we were sliding sideways trying to keep up with one, but that's another story)

Anyway, one day we were with my dad's buddy, he had an F250 tallboy, we probably had 4 or 5 yotes in each rig, on the way home we'd stop at a bar or 2 before getting back to town. We were in one of these bars, my dad and his friend were having a beer and I was having my coke, listening to the stories etc. A guy comes in and asks if anyone in the bar owned a green ford f250, my dad's friend said "I do, why?" the guy walked over "you better get out there, you have a coyote problem"

We all ran outside and sure as shit, one of the yote's decided to wake up, and he was pissed. Standing in the bed of the truck yapping away. Nobody was going to go for the cab of the truck to grab a shotgun, so my dad ran to his truck and grabbed his, he threw it at his buddy and told him to shoot it so he wouldn't be the one messing up the truck. He ended up getting him at a good angle and only a few BB's hit the truck bed.

After that day, my dad would carry a .22 pistol, we'd drop a coyote and we'd circle back, drive up next to the yote and he'd pop it in the head. That was the SOP going forward.

That's over kill and a way to waste good edible organs. This is why young hunters are taught to check if dead with the riffle before getting close. This guy was too excited and didn't do that. He won't make that mistake again.

Maybe it's just me, but that seems bad hunting right there. I know we all make mistakes and that's why it's called hunting not harvesting but that's bad mistakes right there. Probably didnt give the animal time after shooting, didn't check upon approaching, and went straight for the head to look at his trophy. I was always taught to wait for the animal to bleed out if he lays down. Approach from rear and stick with barrel of the gun, then if alive shoot behind head/neck as to not waste meat or it will at least take off away from you first not into you. That should never be a mistake. It's either dead and no worries or it's still alive and you got to be ready to react. Once made sure it's dead then celebrate/give blessing/etc.
