Traveling out of state last night and my son was able to key in address info while I was driving.

Just started letting me do this. Didn’t do this before. I do have FRAC but the switch wasn’t activated. At least I don’t think it was because the truck used gps and knew where I was.

If you find out what the secret is, let me know. We went on a 3,000 mile road trip last month and it was very frustrating that my wife could not enter addresses while I was driving.

This is one thing GM finally got right, the nav in my wife's Denali will give you an option screen while in motion asking if the passenger is typing, if it detects there is someone in the passenger seat. I've wondered for years why all vehicles with factory nav didn't have this.

Pretty sure you have the frac on. I’ve left it on and didn’t notice too. Sometimes the gps seems to work with it on.

I wonder if it would let you use the number keypad on the screen while driving too? Like when calling an 800 number and having to push one for this and 4 for that. I hate that I have to dig my phone back out to go through the menus

I didn’t even know we had a number pad on our trucks. But it might. Pretty much disables the lock while driving. Not just the nav inputs but for everything.

I'm sure Toyota is doing it for safety reasons. Garmin doesn't care about your safety. They'd probably let you run with scissors and swim right after eating too.

no they are doing it for liability reason, cause someone is going to sue Toyota cause they didn't put a lockout on the nav so a dumbass wouldn't wreck while trying to input or fiddle with the nav while doing 65mph.

It certainly is for safety/liability reasons, and I appreciate their concern, but I should have the option for a passenger to input the information while I pay attention to the road, like a responsible adult. I guess there are enough people out there without common sense that makes life harder for all of us.

    Kind of like this:

the garmin just a has a big warning screen prior to starting shifting the liability to the user. Toyota has the same screen prior to startup but they still lock the unit unlike garmin.

Yes. All HeadUnit functions are available all the time when using the FRAC VIM feature.

Right but I thought vim disables the gps function while switched on and would catch back up when switched off.

I generally like my nav system. Garmin is and has been overrated imo.

When the VIM switch is off it makes all HeadUnit functions available.

It may also cause the moving map inidication to stop moving or update slowly when turned off. (Although internally it doesn’t disable the GPS). So the way to use it is to turn off the VIM switch to enter whatever commands you need. Then when you are finished, turn on the VIM switch and continue driving.

    Pretty easy!
