I tried to lock my tailgate. Ignition key seems awkward. Is there a different key that locks the tailgate?

My 03 uses the ignition key. If yours doesn't work try the spare key if you have one.

Either the ignition switch has been changed or in the tailgate lock has been changed. Or it’s just really gummed up. Take the tailgate lock to a locksmith and have him re-key it.

Seems awkward? How so? Did it not turn at all? Or did it work but was hard to turn? Mine was full of dirt and grime. Soaked it with PBblaster and now it operates fine.

Probably your ignition key has developed a memory (worn over time) and the cams don’t match exactly with the back lock.

Or, like others above said. Dirt and grime and rust may be the culprits. PB Blast, then add some grease to your key and work it in there. Go to go for many more years.

Another thing you could do is remove the backing off the tail gate and grease the other points that need it.

Just get the Pop and Lock. Never have to use your key again.

I didn't get any original keys when I bought the truck. Had a spare made at the dealership the other day and it looked different. Parts guy said that the new key is a master and will fit the glove box and tailgate locks even if the one I copied didn't. Might be worth a shot.

If it didn't work at all, does it work on the glove box? If neither you have the "valet" key. It will open doors and start engine but not open glove box or "trunk".
