Because there’s a massive annex not attached in that picture and if u mount it to close to the center it pushes the annex into the side of the bed. Having it off to the side maximizes the usage of that space. It looks angled because my driveway is angled it only ways 120lbs so it not tilting my truck at all. that leftover space on the rack is just enough to mount my bike rack or kayak if I want. The rack is a Thule xsporter they make them in Black now. I went with that options because it’s height adjustable . There aren’t any mounting points on the sides but it works with any accessories that work with Thule racks

To further explan what he was saying about overhang^
My tent is centered on my rack. But I don't often use my annex and the lost space is minimal

Ohh not sleeping on the ground and keeping my RTT just looking for the next big thing. haha
Need to address a few things that sucks with an RTT.
Bathroom time sucks(half drunk and ladder- not good)
Getting the dog in and out of the RTT sucks
    They weigh a lot
Hard to use a heater to help cut the chill
    Can't stand up
Can't see shit out the back window

@n2deep you’d be a perfect candidate to put it to test!

Naww not sold on GFC or Vegabond yet. Think lighter weight. If I could get it without the rack I would be interested.

Our setup doesn't exactly represent what OP is looking for, but I do know of a CrewMax running the same tent as us on a low profile rack. He has more overhang than we do, but still not bad.

    James Baroud Grand Raid XXL

Tent is 165 lbs and sets up/tears down in about a minute. Sleeps myself, wife and two dogs (50 and 70 lbs).

Love those! I looked at those too. I just needed something a little bigger so that is why I went with the Mt. Denali CVT tent.

Old school pitched pop-up tent with an inflatable mattress still works for me. On the ground, but sleeping on a cloud.

I was worried about the length, but it doesn’t hang past the bumper. I like how it sits relatively flush to the cab top (a little lower) but as you can see it renders the middle rear view almost useless. Mine doesn’t block my view through my mirror, but it doesn’t stick flush with the roof line either. It’s a long ways up there!

I’ve had two motor homes - 1) it’s name was Cuzin Eddie 2) - Grizwald

This tent, being it’s so high in the air and that it’s big and bright orange we have given it the name of “Trump Tower!”
