Lockers front and rear, lift kit, 35 tires...so far
Responding to California Kid on preference between Auburn Ltd. Slip and ARB locker. The biggest diference is price and set up needs. The second biggest difference is personal needs. I’ve been building and using many types of axles for more than 30 years and specialize in axle overhaul and modification. As to what will suit your needs is strictly personal. What do you want to do with it? For me, if money and time are no consideration I would go with the ARB units in front and rear diff. When not in use the truck drives like normal. When needed, hit the switch, or switches dependant on what’s needed to traverse the current terrain you’re in and Voila! You have axles locked. This gives you even distributed traction to all wheels.

Many first timers ask the questions; how strong is one? Which is better? All valid and all easy to answer. Both companies have extensive research into their products and are both proven as excellent! If you spend regular time off highway and are rarely in difficult terrain the Auburn is more cost effective, but you will sacrifice fuel economy when driving on regular streets due to it always being, for lack of better words, on. The Ltd. Slip is always working no matter what. But, it works excellent for what it was designed for and that’s enhanced traction aid under normal to moderate circumstances. It is not designed to have one wheel off the ground and place power to the other. For that you would need something a bit more brutal like the Detroit Locker, Power Lock etc. These were designed for aggressive wheel traction on extreme terrain.

If you want something that is designed for all conditions, almost, you would purchase the ARB locker, have it professionally installed and done right so there are no major issues. Here is where the ARB does the best job; when not needed the diff’s are open and function as designed by the factory. When needed, engage the switch and the diff will lock solid. ARB lockers have been significantly tested and are extremely strong. It would take a lot of horsepower, more than the Tundra can produce even supercharged to break one of theirs!

There is a significant cost difference between the two. For about $750.00 you can purchase the Auburn with install bearings, seals, gaskets and new stud crush rings for the cover bolts. I did that for my 2010 Tundra and after 50k it was still working. The only downside is they don’t like synthetic gear oil, which as you know comes factory in Toyota’s front and rear diffs. I used synthetic in mine with no discernable differences. I also ensured to use synthetic cluth additive to match the oil.

I’ve used the ARB and overall were much happier. It cost me $3500.00 for initial purchase with compressor to run both, switches to match and took two weekends to install all to ensure proper installation and protection of lines, compressor etc. They are still going after five years with no issue. One day I will contact the customer I sold the truck to and see if they’re still engaging them both and are working.

The bottom line for me is cost. I know I will drive my truck on pavement most of its life and when time comes to install one in my newest Tundra that will be the deciding factor. Like a supercharger, if I had the money I would’ve done one again, but the cost and availability for the Tundra’s have changed dramatically in the last three years.

Check into all prices to include cost of installation if you cannot do yourself and I believe that will help you decide.
