Just get the oem one part # listed.
He is just trying to see if the fittings he has laying around might work.

    Thread pitch tool.
But you will see if they don’t line up thread for thread. Some are really close, some are just super obvious.

What is cool, is that maybe all Toyotas use this same diff union. :notsure: I got one to put on the Tundra then bought a 2001 4 Runner and (lucky me because I'm taking it out this weekend), the same part fits both. So I did the 4 Runner first and got another to put into the Tundra.

There's a lot of dirt and dust flying around behind the taillights. Do you want a 2-way there? I'd be worried about dirt and dust getting into the diff. The original wasn't a 2 way, why would we need a 2 way at the end of the hose?

@BlueBottle explained it, I think it was him. Without the two-way you aren't solving the vacuum problem when you rapidly cool the diff by submerging it in water.

The vacuum is only a problem when it sucks in water. That's why we put the hose there to get it away from the water. With the 2-way, now you're just vacuuming in dust into your diff.

No it is a problem with creating a pressure differential that encourages water to go through cracks and seals, rather than air going through a two way breather. Something like that.

From the ARB part description "This vacuum will tightly close the valve shut causing air to be instantly drawn into the assembly through the seals. Many times the seals are still submerged below water, leading to the water being drawn into the drivetrain. This will contaminate the oil and possibly damage drivetrain components or your Air Locker."

But your comment makes me think adding a filter to the breather would be a good idea.

How will it suck in air if you use a one-way breather?

There are several different conversations happening here. Or maybe I am just confused.

    1) the oem is one way, the breather does not let air in, only out. (Correct?)

    2) the water therefore is not being sucked in by the breather but rather (or in addition to?) is being sucked in thru the seals. In which case, simply relocating the stock breather does nothing to solve.

    3) if the oem breather is truly 1 way (out only) then using a filter is moot.

    4) if you run a 2way then you should run a filter...

Idk, but it Looks like I will be ordering a 2way to replace the oem i relocated. Then I will be draining my diffs and see, since I have sat in some deep ass water as is...

Oh ok. That makes sense. But I would definitely use some kind of filter if using a 2 way. Last time I took my taillight off there was more mud/dirt/dust back there then on my dirty truck. I'm just gonna leave mine as is for now. Got too much other crap I need to work on. I would think there is enough air in the hose for the diff to suck on even with a 1 way. Hose might look like this though...

    To a T!

That’s also why I have the arb kit. Relocates it with a filter so no need to worry about anything!

From what I understand, the breather is where the air comes from. Basically, when the diff cools it creates a vacuum and the breather releases the vacuum. So by raising the breather up, once the vacuum occurs the breather opens up and lets air in to equalize the pressure.

I am no expert, this is what I found on the inter-webs

The arb is just a filter with splash guard
