Oil change tips

Going to attempt to change my own oil tomorrow. My father-in-law will be helping which he does his own oil all the time.

Any tips at doing it on the Tundra?
What oil does everyone like to use, Brand, weight? Any certain oil filter?

It’s easy. Mobil 1 0-20.. I use genuine Toyota filters. It’s a cartridge style. I get them off Amazon.

 

Mobil1 0W20 OEM oil filter...get a Fumoto valve to slap on your oil pan no mess with the tube and the other valve that connects to the oil canister drain no mess either

 

Mobile 1 0w20 ... the stuff made for Toyota.
Stock filter.

Too make it easier for future uses look at fumoto valve for the drain plug. The Toyota specific filter wrench for the filter housing cap. Now if things get a little messy(which they may) I always like to clean up with some cans of brake cleaner and paper towels. That way there are no drips in the driveway later.

Do you have the oil filter wrench for the oil canister? Oil filter is inside a cartridge and not a "normal" spin on type.

 

Napa put one out... but I don't know the part number to it

 

Hummm.. Looks like I may not be doing this tomorrow then. I can't just get it at the local auto store and have to order parts online.

Ok, so I need that wrench and the tube thing. Where is the best (cheapest) place to get the filter? You wouldn't recommend a different well known oil filter brand, just the Toyota?

 

Lots of members on here go with OEM... I've seen one member on here use a K&N cause he posted a pic of it

 

And also I've seen other's on here mention the canister the one we have is plastic there is one off Amazon that it aluminum or metal type the tube deal is if you don't want a mess it's really up to you

 

What about the TRD High Performance oil filter? Is that different from a "regular" one. It's only $12

 

Also, my father-in-law, a long time car guy, swears by putting a qt of transmission fluid in with the oil. He says it helps keep it from gumming up. Anyone else do that?

 

You could get the filter from Toyota and maybe the wrench. Or get that filter wrench from Napa. You don’t need the Fumoto valve to get your oil change done.
You can add that later at anytime. Even when not wanting to change the oil. You just have to use the old vacuum trick. Stick the hose end of a vacuum over the fill neck and turn it on. Then pull your drain plug and insert the fumoto valve. The vacuum will hold all the oil and not let any drip out or suck it up through the motor.
Ideally yes gather your supplies and then change the oil if you have the time. I get the filters off Amazon. Oil from Costco or Walmart when on sale.

I don’t think that’s necessary. Maybe in the days of 10w40 or 20w50 but not with 0w20 oil. It would basically act as an engine cleaner if it was used in thicker oil.

This one time(about 15 Years ago) I did an oil change on a customers car on another Tech’s rack. His trans fluid and oil guns were reversed from mine. I didn’t notice and sent a car out with 100% atf in it. It came back 6 months later just fine.

 

I'm not an expert by any means but just use what is recommended for oil type. Todays vehicles are made to use specific types , weights, etc. Oils cheap new trucks are not. stick to the book.

 

I’d just take it to the dealer mine charges like $54,really not much savings doing it myself less mess less hassle.

 

Anyone use ramps or is there enough room under there?

Since you do not have the Fumoto valve installed, be prepared for the oil to shoot out at the inside of your passenger tire and on the ground. I made a huge mess the first time i changed the oil

I don't but... I have a 6" lift I us Mobile 1
0-20w and Toyota filter or Wix gold

 

Do not do this /\ - you'll dilute the additive package in the synthetic oil .

Maybe in the 60's you'd add some ATF to cure a noisy hydraulic lifter but them Magic Mystery Oil is the go-to for that issue.

I recommend having the oil filter wrench on hand, sometimes that cartridge canister is B to unscrew.
I use Mobile1 High Mileage 0w-20. I use an OEM filter.

I have heard of adding a Qt of ATF to motor oil but only on older vehicles that required more viscous (thicker) oil. It should not be necessary on the Tundra.

I also top off the grease zerks every time I change my oil. Toyota says this is supposed to be done every 5k miles. On the 2007 Tundra (4x4) I have, there are only 5 grease zerks and they are all on the driveshafts.
