Spare wheel advice please

    Hi all! I've searched a fair bit through the site but am still struggling to work out exactly what to do about my spare wheel. The user manual states not to tow with it, which makes it useless for me, so I want to replace it with something that can be used. Problem is the cost of an oem toyota 20" platinum rim shipped to me in Australia is around $1000 :confused:
    I could put that towards aftermarket rims, however I'm struggling to find any here with at least a +35 offset (it's illegal in Australia to increase your track width by more than 50mm, or to increase tyre size by more than 50mm diameter). If any of the other wheel options from factory have less of an offset that'll help as the track width is based on the maximum available from factory, but I don't know what wheel offsets other than +60 came with the 3rd gen (if any).
    What do you think I should do?
    a) Buy the oem replacement from the states and just suck it up on the cost.
    b) Buy new rims (if anyone can point me in the direction of any with a minimum +35 offset that'd be awesome as I'm really struggling to find any!)
    c) Or should I not worry about it - is the spare really not that bad when towing?

    @MonzTris this info may not be of any use, at all. My apologies if that's the case.

    I assume the $1000 deal is for a new rim + shipping. How 'bout a used one?

    You could message sellers and hopefully find one who'd ship to Perth at your expense. Both Fedex and UPS ship internationally, and they both have stores/shipping centers across the US, i.e. easy to find.

    I bought a take-off alloy TRD rim for my spare from an eBay seller right after buying my truck. It was perfect.

    What kind of weight do you tow? I’m not sure what kind of aftermarket wheels are available in Australia but if you can increase track width by 50mm, that would put you at +10. And there are factory +50 wheels, so technically you could go all the way to a 0 offset. You wouldn’t want to go that wide anyways, you might start rubbing. I would try to find something +25 to +60. Just remember, you would have to use different lug nuts on the aftermarket wheels. And I would also physically measure the height of the new tire to match your current wheels. Don’t just go by calculations because it’ll be off.

    That's Jim! I'll keep looking on eBay to see what I can find - I didn't find anything using the Australian ebay site (searching worldwide for users happy to do to Australia) so will look on the US one. Shipping is about $300 AUD which is a killer.

    Cheers for that Joon - didn't realise there were +50 offset wheels from factory so that makes my life a bit easier :)
    I tow a 3.2T van (approx. 7000lbs), so it's a bit of weight - tow ball down weight is 260kg (580lbs).
    If I went to a +10 offset wouldn't that increase width by 100mm? 50mm each side? Or am I missing something :confused: Gotta admit my head is spinning from trying to work this all out :eek:
    Also, sorry for my ignorance, but why would I need different wheel nuts on aftermarket wheels? Never had that on previous cars so just a bit curious. Cheers!

    Oh damn, it's both sides. :confused: Yeah, there are a few wheels that are +50. They're actually on packages like the TSS package I believe. Hopefully they still consider it factory, but many here purchase the truck new with that package. If that's the case, and since it's both sides, I guess you can only go to a +25 offset. Which I really don't think you want to go under that anyways, your spare will stick out way too much and rub the wheel well. You still have plenty of choices with the +25 offset. My Method NV wheels are +25.

    If he goes to aftermarket wheels the lugs will most likely be different than the stocks. Stocks usually have the flat type, most aftermarkets usually the acorn type.

    Ok, so I found a second hand rim on ebay that was going to be $450 (Australian) shipped, which I thought was ok. Now it was shipped a couple of weeks ago and today I get an email from the shipping broker saying it doesn't have enough postage paid (was rejected by the international shipping centre and returned to the broker). So I now have the option of paying another $160 postage, making it a $610 wheel, or just getting a refund and buying 5 aftermarket wheels (and maybe selling my original rims). What do you guys think I should do? Suck it up and pay the extra postage or just get the refund and replace all wheels?
