The way that wheel folded makes it look like a UBJ fail to me.

 

Pushing 300k. Never changed LBJs. After seeing several pics in this thread... obviously worthy to do. Only buy LBJs and hardware from Toyota, or do ya'll l have a link to buy all the needed parts from online seller?

Never should have started reading this forum again... now I'm reluctant to pull out of my driveway!

 

I’m curious, do you have a 2000? Also, we have several sticky threads that have all of the parts needed based on your year. I’m not going to link anything because you did not list your truck info in your profile.

Yup. I went 304,000 miles on my original lower ball joints. The design change came after the 2000 models. This is by no means advocating for not changing them, it’s just interesting that the majority of those with high miles that don’t see a failure are on 2000 models.

 

Thanks. I now feel a bit better that my Tundra might make it to the store and back without a wheel falling off!

Seriously though, the earlier vid of wheel falling off was disconcertting to say the least. When the truck is lifted up on a rack can the front wheel be rocked back and forth to get an idea of the condition of the BJs? Or is this like a timing belt... replace after xyz miles regardless?

 

There is a test that you can do to check. It’s not 100% accurate. The information on how to do that is located in the lower ball joint sticky thread

 

Welp . . . they didn't go out . . .'BUT', no better time than this to put on the new OEM LBJ's I've been sitting on.
I had complete brake failure right after launching my boat . . . got SUPER lucky.
Pedal to the floor, ZERO brakes.
My buddy came down to the launch ramp and I pulled the trailer off my truck, and put it on his and he pulled my boat out.
Got home and took the ball joints over to the shop and told them, "Put these on while you're under there".
Seeing the truck going up on the flatbed 'with' LBJ's still intact told me 'It's Time' LOL.

 

What caused your brake failure?

 

Pretty sure corroded brake line . . . the guy at the shop said everything in the front brakes was destroyed, rotors, calipers, lines.
Said the master cylinder was fine.
I'm totally stupid for waiting so long . . . I knew things were bad, but was waiting till the front pads needed replacing before tackling it all.
That's why I was sitting on the new LBJ's . . . I was gonna do it all at the same time.
I'm thankful it didn't happen while on the road . . . or worse 'towing' my boat . . . really a sinking feeling hitting the brakes and the pedal going straight to the floor.
Funny thing was . . . it was 4:30 in the morning when it happened and my boat was already in the water . . . so no way in hell was I gonna put that truck on the launch ramp. So I said F-it, and went fishing and figured I'd deal with it later. LOL
