I'm sure it will be at least a new short block.

I'm particular with Maintenance and now at 14700 miles and 4th oil change. No issues. Perhaps I missed this in the thread???? Have a 23 TRD Pro built October 22. Is this part of the TSB?

    Thanks

Toyota has a new TSB for the brakes squeaking. New pads, shims & rotors.
Not sure if this has been responded to or not.

There was a class action suit against Quaker State for the use of Teflon (aka Slick 50) in their oil. That crap cost me an overhaul on the pickup I had at the time. When the suit was settled I received a coupon for a discount on a case of Quaker State oil. I trashed the coupon and will never use Quaker State again. I'm sure the lawyers made out like bandits on that one, too.

I just replaced a short block on a 2023 Tundra with 49k miles. It was withing the engine recall production date of mid February 2023. This one production date was January 18 2023 but Toyota said the engine serial number was after the "new cleaning process date" So this Tundra wasn't involved in the recall. Yes the front main bearing spun.
Today an April 4 2023 Tundra came in knocking & stalling. Not a surprise, the oil was metallic in color.
Our field product reps are not happy with all of this & are encouraging us to make "dealer product reports" on the failed engines to get the recall stretched out to mid or late 2023 vehicles.

Hard to see in the picture but the sections of bearings are at 7&1 o'clock & not 9&3 o'clock which is normal

I think the recall date code needs to be made of elastic. It's going to keep on stretching to include later production runs. Unless Toyota does not want the 2nd image hit and just quietly repairs engines as they fail and sticks to the cleaning process root cause

My coworkers late 23 blew its engine on a roadtrip towing his camper. Fortunately the dealership took it on trade as-is for a 2025

Dealer of the year nominee there

I gotta say when I get my replacement recall engine, if it blows I am done with the 3.4. if a engine produced in 25 or 26 still fails there is a design flaw. 5 years in and Toyota would still be head scratching.

Certainly a hypothetical. But as the failures pop up in post cleaning process update engines the plot thickens. Once replacement engines start hitting +30k if they have failures then it officially a disaster

What they should really do, is if it is a main bearing failure, full engine replacement. This whole time window business and short block replacement is BS. It fits their "contamination" narrative of a bad employee/process implementation, but puts other customers outside the recall window in a precarious place.

I wonder if it is a design issue or bearing issue, why doesn’t it happen more often. The percentage is really small on failures, and even smaller on the hybrids. I wonder if Toyota has this issue figured out.

If it's the same failure issue even 1/2 % is high

Random engine failures associated with mass production by humans would likely be from multiple causes. Occasionally this part fails and next time another one since no part is 100% reliable.

But if the majority of failures are the same it's a weakness. Could be manufacturing, design, parts quality or use case. But something happening consistently is not random or a coincidence

In bearing application tables, for every given bearing size there is an intersection of load versus rpm. The value at the intersection is the B10 or B50 bearing life in hours. B10 represents the quantity that 90% of bearings can be expected to exceed but 10% will fail. A table can be derived statistically for any combination of load, rpm and life for a group but there is always the uncertainty of the exact life of an individual. Correction factors are applied to include shock load or smooth running, type of lubrication grease or oil, continuous lubrication or drip, pressure or spray, and temperature. And so it goes but some will exceed and some will fail and this is true for any device be it oil pump, water pump, alternator, wheel bearing, universal joint etc. There are many variables with bearings including alloy, heat treat, machining tolerance. These factors converge as the designer attempts to optimize for size, weight, life and cost and you end up with a final that doesn't please everyone. As a consumer you weigh the alternatives and either accept it or move on but it is what it is.

If you pulled up to the service department and saw seven brand new tundras in the service bay with torn out internals or 25 crates woth engines marked as "TUNDRA", would you give it a second thought whether to buy the new truck or maybe wait a while?

Not really I wouldn't give it a 2nd thought because those crate engines from Toyota in my mind would be good, the same as in a 2025 new truck. The analogy is hypothetical and really not good because I was already aware that Toyota was recalling for replacement engines in 100,000 trucks when I made the decision to buy a 2025 Tundra anyway, with Toyota's reputation and financial stability in mind. It would have been a different consideration for Ram, not because I thought any less of the truck but because I do think less of Stellantis versus Toyota being on solid footing.

They said the same thing going from MY 22 to 23. Then again going 23 to 24. The 25s just don't have the mileage to catch up to the rest of the previous model years. Seeing early failures on the new models seems to indicate more of the same.

I can not speak for every dealership, but we are one of the bigger ones in my state and while yes we do see the 24's fail, it's not nearly the rate we saw the 22-23's being towed in. We haven't seen a 25 yet.
