05 4.7 Cam pulley

    Doing a timing belt, and noticed my cam pulley on both sides is very different looking than all the cam pulleys I see online when watching how to videos of others.

    If I remember correctly, the 05 has a different intake manifold being a VVTI motor but I didn’t think the cam pulleys would be different.

    just trying to educate myself so all insight is much appreciated.

    The doodad sticking off the cam pulley IS the vvti. Thats HOW they dance the cams, variably. The 2 stage intake manifold is there to spread the torque curve further than they can with cams alone.

    This is exactly what’s I figured but couldn’t find a single video of someone doing a timing belt with a VVTI engine. Thank you

    I mean, it's not a full video, just shows off timing marks, before pulling the pin on the tensioner.

    The other videos are still applicable, just some things may look slightly different.

    should still be OK. Before pulling my belt off. I turned my crank over so that my cams lined up on the T and then made my marks on my crank

    Specifically THIS single wire harness, it CANNOT stay out in the open, it has to get housed behind the fan pulley bracket. Routing info HERE. Mechanics/owners often mis-route it, and it gets damaged by belt/pulleys and engine no runny no more.

    NP. Toyota's timing belt setup is a poka-yoke, it's intentionally designed so it's difficult to fuck up. Make sure the arrows are pointed toward you, and I think the biggest gotcha people typically mention is the bank1 cam jumping on them either before or during belt install. Honor the marks and understand what the differences are between the line and the "T" and the notches and different sized divots on the crank pulley/HB, you should be fine.

    glad you mentioned that. I lined up with the lines and then according to a video I was following, they mentioned do one little more turn to the T to unload the cams from jumping. Hope I didn’t do anything wrong before completely taking the timing belt off.

    It's a Poka-yoke, as long as nothing spun full-circle, you should be fine. There are ways to verify, but it takes some extra work.

    agreed. Nothing even moved through the process at all so I should be good. I have a friend that works at Toyota as a tech stopping by today before button it all up to help confirm. I’ve never really turned wrenches growing up so this was a first real project on a truck so I wanted his blessing before assembling and closing it up.
