If one of my techs gets it wrong, he is backflagged his diag and then he eats his labor on the correct repair. That's why my shop's Fixed Right the First Time score is 98.7%

A lot of the problem is the training in dealerships. Toyota does a good job to send the guys out for training annually, but the Icar stuff is a bit of a joke. Its a powerpoint / video training session for the majority of the time with a quiz at the end that can be retaken pretty quickly.

I think that most of the shops "training" come from disgruntled mechanics that see the new guys as a problem instead of the future and extra help.

I’ve already called it, i dont touch things with screens. Anything newer than 2002 is officially above my pay grade, and the main reason dad bought a 2002 q45. I said i’d work on it, so ive had to work on it.

This is why it’s so crucial to help out when possible with this stuff. Take time with people. And pay it forward when it’s been given to you.

I don’t just talk the talk, I walk the walk. It’s why I was willing to throw out a morning to swing by, walk through it, and help out, share that knowledge. We all should be so willing, and it starts with an example. A little inspiration of confidence in someone goes a helluva long way.

    Nailed it.

I fondly remember when I was in my early teens, and my stereo tuner stopped working. I had that damn thing down to pieces, lid off, boards out, etc. while dad was at work. It made me realize how basic everything was under that lid. But then, when I found the problem (swollen capacitor), Dad was, like, "Oh. Now you expect me to teach you how to solder?"

He did, though. And I learned. And I went on to fix several amps/tuners for friends after that, though two-thirds of them were usually a blown glass fuse on the board, because they were being stupid.

I grew up helping my dad and then progressed to working on my own stuff. But now that I am past 50, I am starting to have mobility issues in my finger joints. I have already had surgery on 3 of them and just jammed my middle finger that was showing signs of it too along with another. Getting into tight spaces wrenching on things is terribly painful, especially if it slips and I bang that knuckle on something. I can't bend it for about an hour after. So, I try to do what I can and pay for the rest for now. I can't wait to see the look on my daughter's face when she officially gets to drive my dad's truck for the first time. She's been helping when she could and I plan to show her how to work on things as well now that she is driving.

Yeah, the fact retirement age is considered to be 65, and there are some who are determined to up that to 70 in the near future ... is a joke. By then, those of us who actually put in the work, our bodies are too damn beat up to enjoy it. Unless you're a billionaire, or executive, or whatever. Which is super messed up.

I think we might within a year or three of each other's age. I've got an autoimmune condition that'll be with me forever, and it's starting to cause arthritis. It started in my big toe and secondary toe on one foot, then moved to the other. Now it's firmly in one of my arches, and started showing signs in the other arch. I'm dreading when it finally makes it to my hands. I already have enough issues with these damn ganglion cysts that keep popping up at the base of my fingers, I had surgery to remove one (permanently, thankfully), but the rehab part after surgery, and the temporary nerve damage SUCKED, so I really don't want to do it on the other two.

I grew up on a farm. If it broke, we fixed it. If we needed a barn, we built it. I was taught by " come on boy.." Bought my first pickup truck at 15. I'll be 62 this year. I have retired in part because I can see myself getting older and my parts not working as well as they once did.. I have things that I wanna do still.

Well shit, I finally got the email I had been dreading from bodykits.com. The candy cane tails are not actually in stock, and as I already knew, were discontinued. Damn, they were the only site online that still has them listed as in stock. I guess I need to find someone to 3D print some. But the KBD valence should ship soon.

Beau was letting people take a ride in his truck to experience the 15's, at T2S. They were insanely loud. On Broken Arrow trail, my driver side latch for my cap got stuck, and no matter how much I man handled it, I couldn't turn it. I thought I was going to have to break it... Beau pulls up next to me and cranks up the bass. True story, on my life, the bass vibrated the latch free and worked fine ever since.

@des2mtn I might've missed it, but did you swap the MC or brake booster for your rear disc swap?

Not the switch, but the actuator mechanism inside the door.

Went ahead and ordered another Amazon cheapo for now just to get it here. Idk why I'm so irritated about having to manually unlock my doors. Probably cause it's hot and muggy outside.

Do they come with an extra extra large gas tank? I can't imagine the piddlin mileage with those puppies installed.

His profile is limited, so I can't just search for his build thread and no link in his signature (had to turn my phone sideways for that one :D). Search for "build" posted by @des2mtn also comes up empty.
I suppose I'll search "brakes" by Dez and endlessly scroll through all those results. Truth is I have little to nothing better to do for the next 3 hours anyways. :anonymous:

The cysts are similar to what I get on my the back of my fingers but I was told that I have Dupuytren's contracture that is causing them. Not sure I believe the bumps on the back are but it does say that trauma to the skin can cause them to form lumps and the places that I have them are on the knuckles that I hit all the time on stuff. The base of my thumb from bowling and the base of my ring finger from my wedding ring when it got a little small. My right index finger will not bend at the first joint closest to the tip after surgery on the second knuckle.

Autoimmune diseases are not fun. I have several friends with different ones and they are always hoping for the good days when it's not flaring up. I feel for you @shifty` .

Your pedal likely feels mushier than what mine would have been with the OEM master cylinder, since mine had a bigger bore and longer pushrod. One other thing to consider with MCs and disc brakes, is that the Tundra MC should also have different residual check valves than the Sequoia. The check valve is one way and keeps a small amount of pressure to the lines. Disc brakes use a 2 psi residual check valve and drums use a 6-10 psi usually. If the check valves are failing, that can lead to increased pedal travel and spongy pedal

Fun thing about getting older, all the stuff starts to surface on you, and you hear about all kinds of fun stuff that never came into your vocabulary before.

I won't get too deep into it, but we've gotten some really bum-ass news in the last year or two for both me and mine. One of my best friends got UPS, an aggressive sarcoma, had to have a 4x10 chunk of his back (bone and tissue) cut out between his shoulder blades. My better-¾ was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder, cancer-related. I've known I've had something autoimmune for at least 10-15 years now, but was only able to finally prove it 6-7 years ago because it's often misdiagnosed. Another friend of mine has some autoimmune disorder docs have never seen/identified, where his bones are all fusing together at the joints, and he's been to Mayo several times ... his brother died a couple years back of a super rare form of ultra-aggressive cancer, both suggest they were probably living at/near an undisclosed waste dumping site or something equally stupid some company probably did and will never own up to, although knowing what it was could at least maybe help with his diagnosis.

That said, I know three people with Dupuytren's. One isn't showing symptoms, surgery was pretty good for the other but he passed suddenly last year, and the third is a friend of my MIL's, surgery was miraculous for one hand, so much so that he got the other done recently, and is in rehab, results are looking equally promising. Before his 1st surgery, one of his fingers was pulled so tight it was practically touching the base of his palm at rest. We've got one other member on here with it, and there are two I knew on the 67-72chevytrucks forum with it as well.

There are only a few places ganglions will form, but they do show up on the back/top side of your fingers and wrist, if you're in doubt, get a 2nd opinion. Mine are always flexor tendon sheath cysts. Principle at my kid's elementary school a decade ago had same as me, as soon as one goes away, it (or another) comes back. Always at the base of the finger and palm, to the inside, like this pic shows. Aggravating as hell when you go to crank on something and clamp down on it. I got the one in my right hand index fixed because it was a problem. Other two are left hand, middle finger bottom is the one that gets me the most.

    I lol'd

That really stinks. Nothing close to that, but I have had an inflamed knee tendon for 30 of my 40-plus years and got-dang, if I hit that spot on my knee on something, it's like a kick to the balls-level incapacitating pain. So I guess I'm saying....I can only kind of relate, but hands....man, y'all have my full sympathy.
