They look pretty similar and the vibrant has I think 3 different sizes to control the amount of exhaust to be read by rear O2.

What’s the consensus on these in terms of cooling? I suppose additional fluid capacity never hurts. The fins should also help. Anyone with evidence these are helping decrease pan/converter temps?

Also, did you use the gasket it comes with? Or seal with something else?

Don’t expect 100* drops. I wasn’t monitoring the tundra but my last Cummins I saw ~15-20* drop fairly consistently with a similar pan. I attributed it more to the additional capacity and not the fins.

I have the PML and have temps 165-180, occasionally 190 with some wot pulls. But I don't have the warming puck or factory T-stat. I have a 165 deg t-stat.
Hopefully someone who has it with the traditional setup will chime in.
Seals with cork gasket or RTV. I used the gasket. Can't use factory gasket unless using B&M large pan.

I used the cork gasket with a fine coat of the toyota FIPG (orange).
I'm a modaholic and love to tinker. I figured since we tow, it cant hurt. My t-stat is pinned open.
I'll start watching the trans temp soon.

@snivilous checked out the motor out of the tundra pistons look damn good for 80k+miles and many of those miles with hard use. Compression test confirmed cylinder 7 being dead while all others showed great compression still.

If history proves correct than most likely ring let go. No 5 and 7 seemed to fail...

We also confirmed the TRD spec motor unfortunately is no good. So this will likely mean we’ll be doing the built motor with my engine sooner than later.

DAMN! I found out from SOL, that 2 of the injectors I acquired were plugged. They had to spend extra time cleaning them, but so far so good. The tune in that truck was also a box, not a superduper @snivouls amazing tune. I'M so thankful for him and this site. I just love all the feedback and positive attention everyone gives everyone and the willingness to help.

IIRC, there were a few cylinders that has extra fueling in the factory tune. Wonder if that plays a last in the same cylinders burning up.

Envious of the build, though! Can't wait for you to share more details about it.

That sucks, what happened to the motor, why is it no good? I thought it was supposed to be a stout race motor?

pistons look smoked and compression test no bueno. Yep was a spec’d motor so new oem for the class. Guessing during them running it hard in test runs/truck it was hurt unknowingly. Not sure what engine management system they ran or tuning etc. My source was extremely surprised as well. Interesting since this was from a major known team.

This is a fun game

    Initial thoughts????

This is #7 which was the only cylinder to read low (as in zero) compression.

And from the top side the piston seems fine? The dot I think is right next to where the skirt is melted.

Also is the crank supposed to look this hot around the bearings? Or is this from manufacturing???

@reywcms and I are utterly baffled what happened to this engine. Our initial thoughts is the #7 squirter got clogged and that's why it melted? But weird it's on the bottom. We also suspect that when he was having issues in like January or February and the plugs were all nasty, it was already hurt and straight pumping oil into the combustion chamber and full blowby shoving oil down the intake and that's why the plugs have looked so "rich" is there really "oil rich".

    Some $30 Amazon one

Yes, almost every N/A factory tune I've seen has modified fueling per cylinder, but it's rpm/load dependent what the increase is. It's a table called Injector Multis. The N/A factory files vary IMMENSELY in what the injector mutli values are. The TRD tune sets them all to 1 (ie turned off) so that's what I do with all tunes, plus imo it makes it easier to ensure the fueling is correct because you don't get random outliers. And sometimes values are even leaner. Additionally there are cylinder specific timing tweaks, usually only on 1 and 2, which I again always turn off.

The bore scope on all cylinders of the "good" engine was nasty. It looks like insane detonation since the surface is so pitted, but hard to say. You can't even tell where the pistons were machined like on Reys and our other engine. Additionally lots of surface rust, maybe the rings are seized since I tested compression on 2 and 4 and for 70 and 85psi and didn't bother testing more. For comparison Reys (OG) engine tested 151-175 compression with #7 being the outlier and totally dead. Fairly large spread, but the lowest compression was higher than the highest on my old engine and other ones I've tested so not a huge worry. But 70-85 right off the bat even with seized rings is pretty bad, and check out the look of some of the pistons from the "good" engine.

That's wild! I'd almost rather a hole in the block so you know it's done vs something like that.
