Truck is finally under the knife. Let’s see if these Amazon gears and eBay Powertrax are any good!

I’m just waiting for you to tell me it’s not worth it and I can sell my whole gear package and buy more power parts. :D

Actually though, I hope you enjoy them after the long wait and dealing with some clowns to finally get them installed! Maybe one day I can join the club…

If @Mdl cant get a flat 4 second 0-60 with his than I’m not sure I’m interested. o_O

    I'm working on it...
The gears are holding up. They've been up to the 100's, been under stress getting sideways and pulled a few tons of gravel. Gets me to the store and back, I have no complaints with the cheap gears.

Well the excitement was short lived. I had the Motive gears polished locally and apparently they removed too much material during the process. The pinion bearings have excessive play on the pinion shaft. The rear just slid on by hand, no press required. The front was even worse. They also said the shape of the rear gear pattern wasn’t nice.
Looking to overnight some gear sets from ECGS now.

So anyone want to buy some cool paperweights?

Ouch. I may have a set of unused gears sitting on the shelf from the beginning of this thread. Happy to send them your way if you want to roll the dice on another set of not-polished-extremely-cheap-5.29-gears..

Oh man. That sucks! Any recourse from the polisher? Zuk mentioned some motive gear patterns that were off.

Appreciate the offer but the shop doesn’t want to use Motives now, and I need them ASAP. Truck is torn apart and I’m just gonna have them get whatever brand gears they have done successfully on other Toyotas.

I forgot who but Zuk mentioned company that sells gears ready to go, 2nd was revolution gears. That's too bad that happened.

Having installed several, what say you @texoma on a slip fit for the pinion bearings after polishing? I am reading different opinions. Some do it on purpose and say the pinion nut will tighten the race down. Others say it must be press fit?

Seems similar to the tolerances of the PowerTrax around the time of my install. Same parent company. Too bad there was a third party in the middle of it all since I assume that voids any potential warranty claim

If the polishing place truly over polished them then they should at least refund their polishing services IMO. That costs more than the gears themselves in my case. I think paid 175ish dollars for the set of gears. Some say they’re not supposed to polish the bearing contact area.

I’m sure I can bitch loud enough and get the $300 back from the polishing. I might need to since I just had to pay over $1500 for new gears, rear install kit, and overnight shipping.

I wouldn't rely on the pressure from the pinion nut. Your allowing the chance of having the inner race just spin on the shaft. I've seen different tolerances where there was higher pressure required to press on bearings.

For giggles I pulled out my motive gear pinion to mic it, then compared it to the Nitro gear set next to it. I compared the larger bearing diameter but suppose I could check the smaller bearing as well.

    Motive - 1.763”

    0F3F6B47-F4E1-4B1B-BFC4-532589A87C6B.jpg

    Nitro - 1.768”

    9AD37463-F1B8-46FD-B499-215DD214FD1C.jpg

Maybe 5 thou is enough to loosen up a press fit, but I wouldn’t think so..?

What’s the cost gonna be now, since you had to buy new hardware? Labor and gear total?

If my 20ton press doesn’t creek and make me work out to press on the bearings, then they’re too loose. You can always use some green loctite on it to be safe, but loose, no good.

Granted these aren’t really outside mics, just shitty Chinese calipers we are using, but my rear motive measures 1.771”

Just measured my nitro kit Koyo bearing race diameter and it’s 1.7370 vs the pinion 1.7710.

1.7710-1.7370 =0.034 interference. Sounds like a tight interference fit to me. Pinion is definitely larger than the bearing. By that measurement almost too large I’d think. Like I said though, using shitty calipers.

I’ll have to check the fronts then too, not sure if I’ll have time this evening or not. Getting ready to go camping.

My bearings were a bitch to press on with the 12 ton. Thought my jack was going to explode. Need bigger press!

Those are revolution gears, their polisher is down I think, they may have fixed it.
