went to the dealership last week for a oil change and tire rotation and ask the service advisor how much a tune up would be as i missed the 60k mile service ( truck now has 88k ) ( this advisor isnt mine, not that it matters ) and he gives me a price of almost $500 for a tune up.

i thought this was a bit much and just said ok.....so for those that have had theirs done on the

    5.7's how much was it ( 2018 ) ?

    Too many, but not enough....
Tune up has as many definitions as there are opinions. If you want a complete one, do ALL of your fluids, drain and fill. Change pcv, clean your throttle body, clean your MAS airflow sensor, get a new air and cabin filter, grease your zerks if you have them, check/change brakes/fluid.

All that would be less than 200 if you did it yourself.

Not sure what they want to do for tune up, but I can tell you my local dealer tried to sell me a 600 dollar spark plugs change on my wife's 45,000 mile rav 4 along with a 717 dollar rear brake job, that was 4 plugs by the way, at any rate the dealership has lost any maintenance on my tundra or her rav, find out more before you take it to dealership better yet find a good local garage

all he mentioned was the plugs and labor and that was kinda got me. so that is why i figured i would ask here to see what others have paid in the past to get an idea.

I've seen people do 30k tune ups over 1k. Mine was 900 at a smaller shop. That included all fluids changed, filters and a HD service. It really can vary depending on how far you want to go. 500 for just plugs seems more than reasonable though, hopefully some fluids in there.

You CANNOT do a full fluid swap and everything under 200 dollars like another poster said, the tranny fluid and transfer case fluid costs that much itself. Then you add in the filters and other fluids...

Ya the new thing at my local yota dealer is change plugs due to age, just tried hitting my parents for 800 dollar plug change on their 6 cylinder tacoma 2018 with 60k on it, simply due to age they said, unreal how they try and add shit like this during inspection, I think they're done going there as well

I had taken my 2007 Lexus is250 in for a tune up and they wanted something like 600 to change the plugs. I figured it wouldn't be that hard......
After I was done I would have GLADLY paid 600 bucks. It took 4 different drivers (sockets and Allen wrenches) and about 3 hours. While I was at it though I put new gaskets in the valve covers. Still, I would of rather had the 3 hours back.

I would ask for an itemized breakdown of what they consider a "tune up". 88k miles, Im guessing maybe trans fluid, coolant, rotate and balance tires, oil change, check air filters and maybe grease zerks. Also maybe check brakes and fluid.

I don't make $200/hour, so I'd gladly spend the 3 hours doing the work. But dealers have to eat too, so I'm glad there are people willing to pay the prices.

I would argue plugs aren't needed until a computer scan shows misfirings. I have a Lexus with 160k on the original plugs and no issues. I realize it is a Lexus, but still I think plugs are one of those things that people replace because it says to vs when really needed.

Provide a list of all they said they would so and then we can break down whether it is expensive or not. Dealers are naturally higher due to their nature, but in terms of quality of work, another story. I'm dealing with a dealer now in terms of warranty work and my message to them loud and clear is quality of work, not speed.

That’s like saying I shouldn’t change my oil till I hear my bearings grinding. Waiting for failure is not a service interval. Calculating average life and building in a margin of error is a service interval. Hence the 100k service interval suggestion for platinum or iridium plugs. The ol’ coppers were only 25k miles.

Does it not use a Toyota engine and denso plugs? Trying to figure out how this makes any difference.

You can easily get OEM spec fluids for the transmission and transfer case for under $200.00.

The only way it would cost that much is if you are buying overpriced fluids at dealer parts counter prices.

You can eaily get all 8 OEM plugs for under 100.00 and do them in 30-45 min with very basic hand tools in an apartment parking lot, while watching a YouTube tutorial...lol. Anything more than an hour labor for plugs on a Tundra is an absolute ripoff.

This is as bad as 300.00 for the PCV valve - a 15.00 part that takes 5 min to swap out.

For reference. And because we love pictures. Here are what my OEM Tundra plugs looked like at under 70,000 miles. You might say "damn near new condition."

Pretty sure my owners manual calls for plug replacement on my 07 every 60,000 miles. That seems ridiculous to me.

I think it is prudent to find out what the dealer includes in the “Tune-up”. Or, you may want to consider telling him what you want included in the tune-up. Being on the same page is important.
At 88,000 miles most of what Mad Max mentions should be performed. I did change plugs in my Honda Ridgeline (before my Tundra) and Corolla XRS at 100,000. As TundraMcGov. Stated, I was amazed at the shape of the plugs.

I have to ask: Is changing the plugs in a Tundra that big of a nightmare? I only have <20,000 on my 2020. So I’m a ways off from having to worry about plugs.

2018 Tacoma with the direct injection motor D4S actually gets plugs at 60k its in the manual. 22+ Tundas its a 40k interval

Some dealers are scumbags though and make the good ones seem bad as well.

Im not sure where you got those numbers but 75LF for the transfer case alone is $75 which the Tundras take two quarts $150, Redline 75W85 for the diffs 7 quarts is $147 or you can use 75w90 Mobil 1 synthetic at $112, Toyota brand stuff is $35 a quart, Toyota transmission fluid alone costed me $150 at wholesale prices. I think plugs are almost 100, filters are $42 for air and cabin, oil change and filter $65. Im sure I forgot something but that was my cost to do it myself. Oh hoses and radiator fluid were 155 last year. brake fluid was 21 dollars in fluid to flush each brake line on the truck. I get wholesale pricing because of the city I worked for or my military discount.

    What is a tune up?
An Italian tune up is free!
I think changing the plugs is so they don't seize, not from wearing them out.
Ask the F150 owners that ignored the swap.

Any shop saying you need a "tune up" on an EFI engine should be avoided.
