Hi all, hoping someone has seen this before or can give me advice on troubleshooting. While driving I’ll hear an electronic clicking sound, seems to be coming from behind the dash. Sometimes I’ll notice the RPM jump up 100-300. Transmission doesn’t down shift but the RPM bounces around a bit. Most of the time I don’t notice a bump in RPM. If my cruise control is on, it will kick off. I most often hear the clicking when cruising at constant speed, but I have heard it when accelerating or slowing down.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the issue? I know, very difficult to troubleshoot without being in the truck. Thanks in advance for any help!

I’m just realizing we don’t have what I’m about to tell you in our community info thread: https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

But you should be aware there’s an issue with our trucks with the OverDrive button wiring, where it’ll rub through at the point the OD button wires enter the steering column from the hollow shift lever. There are pics of this here on the forum. I’m wondering if yours are rubbed through, making contact to shift into OD (thus kicking the truck from 5th to 4th gear) and kicking up the RPM? It would account for the clicking sound (relay engaging) and RPM increase (forced downshift).

Purely speculation, of course. If you do pop off the column plastics to check, if there is any play in your shift lever, you should really check the shifter cable bushing while in there. More info in the thread I linked. Search the 1st page for the word “sloppy”.

Ok thanks shifty. Most of the time, the RPM doesn’t seem to jump up. And when it does, not as much as when I would turn OverDrive off. So I don’t think the transmission is ever downshifting. I’ll check the OD wires and shifter bushing when I can though. Thanks for the reply.

The cruise control kicking off and (rare) RPM change are big symptoms to me. @BubbaW (IMHO) always has the best ideas about electrical stuff like this.

I took a video of it. Wanted to post it on here but it’s not letting me upload it.

Best bet is to hit www.imgur.com and drag/drop to upload, tell it to use audio if needed. Then simply copy the URL of the imgur upload page here and it’ll
    Auto-link it.

It doesn’t mean there’s not a click but I can’t hear it. It also appears you’re on a fairly flat section and the slight dropping of RPM and KM/H would suggest VSS and not electrical issue

I know the video isn’t great. The clicking is 2-3 seconds into the video. It clicks twice, sometimes it will click 3-4 times.
I was on a flat road. If it’s a VSS issue, a change in speedometer would cause the cruise to kick off? Is that right?
    Thanks for the help

Sounds like a relay clicking on then immediately off. (or off then immediately on) Can you tell more precisely where behind the dash it's coming from? (driver's or passenger's side) Do you have any aftermarket accessories? (alarm, remote start, etc.)

I agree, it does sound like a relay going on/off. I do have a remote start installed. And a trailer brake controller.

I’ve owned the truck for about a year and a half and this issue just started in the last month or 2.

I notice it more when cruise control is on obviously, but I have heard the clicking when cruise is not on.
