I think FI tend to get more by pass due to the pressure, while it wouldn't hurt to have a CC, might not be necessarily to have it, unless you already observed some issues that might warrant it.

J&L Oil Separator Co CC's are very reasonable and made in America.

I have direction injection so it was an easy choice. SC'd 5.7> yes, due to the higher pressures. Your 5.7 isn't DI and your intake valves are constantly getting "washed" by gas.

No opinion on the matter, the 3ur-fe does have a built in oil separator fwiw.

What happens to the blowby vapors? They are being separated but are they being caught, not that it matters on the 5.7?

I don't remember how many miles, a few Ks, but I removed my Evil Energy. No point in weakening already weak PCV vacuum on that engine (not 3UR). The engine blew exhaust valve shortly after, because bore taper (hello open deck), worn piston rings and absolutely trashed valve steam seals. PCV oil was like a drop in a lake of oil that engine was going through.

Be aware the unheated PCV hoses will freeze over in winter, if your location have winters. In this winter-proof car PCV is heated with coolant and electricity.

Yes that's the one.. Not sure if it works yet, it's only been in there a month. But like you said it's $35 vs $300, so you really can't loose. I had a catch can on my 2002 4.7 and it had minimal oil in it every oil change...So I think it's worth it, even if it doesnt do to much, not really a deal breaker for the price.

The blowby gas/fresh air mixture goes to the intake manifold.

That's why it's wise to use the shortest hoses possible. Never had winter issues here at almost 8,000 ft altitude and gets quite cold.

I just didnt like how "loose" the SS strands felt compared to the copper one. They'll both work...I was just being extra picky.

There are a few old post on the forums discussing catch cans on NA set ups and the CC side never catches anything from what I've seen regardless of NA of FI. One of the posts discussed the built in separator that returns the oil back to the pan which is probably why all the CC side cans I've seen posted here run dry.

From my very un-educated and possibly wrong knowledge of CC, I think the design is the biggest issue that CC aren't catching anything, but also that FI tends to catch more than NA?
I don't know, I just know I have a $250 unit sitting there doing nothing. Not that there is anything wrong with it.....

Fair comment. It is feasible all the designs are flawed in the same way but I haven't surveyed every catch can design. From the early posts seen here on Tundras it seems to be true all the catch cans don't catch anything CC side but they are accumulating on the PCV side.

If I were purchasing today J&L is what I would go with since the old working Radium isn't available. Folks have had success with Amazon cans too but I would still choose to support a local VA business.

If the lines aren't oily inside, then nothing is really flowing through the system...which is a good thing. You don't want to see oil in there. You could always check your throttle body to see if its getting dirty too. I have a J&L on my 3rd gen and it catches some oil...but not enough to drain every 5k..and thats with extra boost from the JB4 and running E30 blend.

I remember now how long ago i last check. It was last October when i installed this catch can.. bout 6 months and 1 oil change since..bought the truck September 2024 and installed it October 2024… so in 6 months you can see how much blowby it caught. Worth it for me..

That’s an alarming amount in 6 months. I change my Durango’s twice a year (every oil change) and it’s maybe 2 ounces worth. My previous LS was about the same.

I suppose one could measure how much they take out and then replace that with fresh oil every time they drain the can.

I dont think I’m that concerned to have to do that. When i do the oil change, i top it off to the full mark. If i lose this much between oil change, it doesn’t mount to anything. At least not enough to worry bout oil level.
