Because most ppl rarely use 4L. It's so quick to just flip to 4H, and then hit the locker if a bit of extra traction is needed. Going to 4L requires you to stop, put it in N, then get going again.

On the first gen Tacomas this was called the grey wire mod. You just grounded a wire and you could control the e-locker at any time, not just in 4 LO. I mostly used it in 2 HI to rip around in the desert.

I wonder if it's as simple as it used to be on Tacomas.

I've used the one in my F150 in 2wd more than I ever did in 4hi or lo. Why?

    1. Because I can
    2. It makes drifting better
    3. I dont have to wait around for 4wd lo to engage
    4. It makes drifting better

Not allowing the locker to be engaged in any drive mode is some annoying nanny BS. Typical Toyota move, right up there with turning off the truck when opening the door after a remote start. Whoever thinks of these things could F up a wet dream.

Personally, I'd wait for an aftermarket product. Probably the cheapest route as well. The Tacoma and Tundra setup appear to be identical in their general operation, and I do know the Tacoma uses pulse width modulation to activate the solenoid. This is where you might run into issues trying to actuate the factory locker with a hard wired setup. It very well may be possible, but I also suspect sending xx voltage to that solenoid could *potentially* cause some issues, i.e. overheating, considering its OEM operation. At first glance, the system seems pretty simple, but Toyota added a dose a complexity with how the solenoid is actuated, and how the locker status is read by the 4WD ECU. So I guess the real question is, why does Toyota use PWM to activate and hold the solenoid, and if not necessary, how robust is that solenoid and will it welcome a straight 12vdc without issue? IDK, but for the cost of a third member (assuming they can be swapped) I would go with Eaton or ARB unless I got one hell of a deal on the OEM setup.

You make a really good and wise suggestion. The locking carrier sub assembly is $479 which is surprisingly reasonable. That is assuming it is complete assembly and direct bolt in. I actually prefer a LSD so I should research those options also. Appreciate your input.

Wow, that is dirt cheap compared to what I assumed it would run. Interesting.. Once upon a time you could get an OEM mechanical LSD in the second gen Tacoma. Not sure if they did the same for the Tundra around that time or not. It was shorted lived and only lasted from 05 to 07 IIRC. I'm sure with traction control advances at the time, dropping the mechanical LSD was a no brainer to the Toyota bean counters.

I think they had to do that to keep from getting sued if a child or thief jumped in the vehicle after remote start, but the owner was too far away far to prevent.

I don’t have remote start but I thought other models you have to insert the fob/key into the vehicle to operate it which would be an equivalent fail safe against unintended consequences, and a Toyota fob can stay in your pocket, but have to restart via push button after entry from remote start.

Makes since if they could use the brake to kill the vehicle if the fob is not inside when the brake is pressed though. Must be a fob 1 and fob 2 issue, my wife’s car will allow you to lock a fob into the car if you are locking the doors from the other fob. It will not allow you to lock a door with door locks if only 1 fob is around because it knows your locking the only keys in the car.

In that case you remote start, and a kid or thief jumps in a coincidentally the other fob is in there so the car does not shutdown when brake is pressed, and Toyota gets sued.

Seems like factory remote start is only used to pre cool or heat the car and not intended to make operating the car easier or more efficient.

Auto LSD is nothing more than "spin control" with the brakes being applied to a wheel that is spinning much faster than another one. It is not anything at all like a limited slip differential. To get a locker on any truck you need to go to Ram or to Ford pickup.

It's a bit of a marketing fib to include the acronym "LSD" because D=differential. I'm pretty sure over the years I've seen this approach labeled ALS or ABLS. Those acronyms would be more accurate.

Wonder if an actual aftermarket e-locker would somehow mess with the oem nanny

Wow this is much more complicated than the older Toyotas. Interested to see how it goes. I remember the "grey wire mod" on the old Tacoma.

Gone are the days where we could do the "fog light anytime mod" that required only bypassing a relay.

I am also annoyed with Toyota for this one.... Make it available in 4hi, atleast.

Any chance this is a Techstream setting?

Seems pricey to unlock the use of hardware the truck already has from the factory.

I'm curious if the factory diff lock light comes on with experimental designs logic box.
