First Gen Lower Ball Joint(LBJ) Failures

Whenever I venture into Facebookland I encounter the same "my opinion is better than your facts" attitude that permeates throughout FB, and often degrades quickly into the culture war. So I may take a peek from time to time, but I don't interact. I'm glad we don't have that here (well, not so much...).

Moog supposedly have a class action lawsuit against them for this but I can’t find it online. If I do, I’m sure a bunch of Facebook 1st gen Tundra owners will sign up.

 

Prices look like they’ve gone up. I’m guessing due to tariffs. What was $95/each at the local dealer is now $112/each.

Summary - LBJ failed after 133k miles, 17.5 years on a 2005 DC 4x4 that spent entire life in the Northeast and had the LBJs replaced in the 2007 Recall campaign. There was an early sign of leaking grease and a subtle wandering sensation but there were no noises, no grinding, and no popping.

 

I too experienced the wander and generally sloppy looking boot and surrounding area and I too kept driving. I’m one of the lucky ones. I replaced mine with OEM + new dust / debris guards. In my hubris and general invincibility complex, I believed my 50k+ mile moogs would not collapse on me. Heck, I wasn’t even sure they were really bad as they had no physical symptoms when checked on the vehicle. Upon removal of the LBJs, it became readily apparent how worn they were. One was able to be rattled around in the joint. The design and implementation of these joints puts them in a stress or loaded situation at all times. Checking them on the vehicle may not produce the classic signs of failure. Use OEM. Change before they fail. They are about $200 a pair from Toyota. I will change mine at each timing belt interval as part of my 100K mile major maintenance interval.

 

Alright, alright . . . just ordered an OEM set for my 2006 DC 2WD.
Although it's a pavement princess w/ 80K miles, I don't wanna end up in the hall of shame.

Off-road is a smoother ride for me than on pavement with the massive new potholes and poorly patched old ones.

 

Remind me, do people only recommend replacing the LBJ bolts anytime you replace the LBJs themselves, because by then it's time to do the bolts? Or do you recommend replacing them anytime you remove them? Are they like leaf spring U-bolts, where they stretch when torqued, and are recommended for replacement anytime you remove them?

I've got LBJs with about 10,000 miles on them, less than a year old. I'm going to be replacing my front coils and figure I'll need the extra space. IF I need to replace the LBJ bolts if I remove them, I figure I'll just pop the ball joint instead. Rather than replacing 8 bolts, it's just two cotter pins. I've got the OTC front end kit so it's really no problem for me to pop the joint.

 

Just when the LBJs are replaced. Although for my 2nd set I never replaced my bolts. I just reused them. 3rd time just recently I replaced them.

 

They both stretch. Search, this subject has been covered.

but in short. Just replace the bolts with the LBJ's. Don't over torque and things should be gravy

 

I jack my Tacoma and Tundra up every 6 months and do the pry bar movement test. Last year the Tacoma had movement so replaced them but my tundra still has no movement. Is that what most of you guys do?
