Borescope would be my friend in this case, as well.

While this thread has upset me because of the deceit of the seller, I stumbled across a rerun last night of "My Name is Earl" which made me happy...karma's a bitch!

The buyer has responsibility here, as well, though. I believe he knows that, too.

I have several options here. 1. I've ordered a bore scope as suggested and gonna check this engine, but even if there is no damage this engine still has 300k on it! Option 2. I've been searching for a parts truck that's hit in the ass end or rotted frame, There's a bunch out there. Just missed one yesterday in Georgia, man sold for $800. Had all the parts I needed including a good engine. AND was the same color as mine. It had a rotted frame and had 112k on the clock. Broke my heart. But there's more out there. I'm in no big hurry and I told you all in the beginning, I'm one to give up on anything and now I'm determined to bring this truck back. On a brighter note, I received my radio yesterday and installed it, it works great and my dash is back together, looking stock
and shining like new. I know some of you are saying "This guy has no motor but he's worrying about a radio" . That's just me. I always start at the wrong end.

Here’s one situation where you can actually buy a Tundra with a rotted frame cheap in the rust belt.

I just believe it's worth remembering that although the seller clearly misrepresented the product and is a fucking low-life for doing it, there were 2 parties involved. You did purchase it sight-unseen, and that's on you, and, as I said, I believe you know that. Just trying to add some balance and fairness with the dog-piling on the seller.

I hope it works out in your favor. There are obviously a lot of members willing to help and a vast store of knowledge to assist along the way.

Best case scenario, borescope reveals no damage and OP can proceed with necessary repairs and maintenance. Worst case is still not a forgone conclusion, even if there are certain components damaged. If smart, he could still come out ahead financially. We'll see.

The bore scope I bought doesn't turn upside down. I would have to bend it before putting it through the plug hole to see valves and I don't think it will fit. If i look at all the pistons and don't see any damage to pistons or even marks on them, I can probably assume no valves got hit. Am I correct in this assumption?? I'm gonna give it a shot today. We see what happens.

It sounds like he knows what he got into and is making into a project. I like it. Some people have simple hobbies like video games, or knitting, this guy has a great hobby on his hands. Mechanical stuff, research stuff (parts locating), diagnostic problem solving, etc. kudos to tompands.
Lots of projects on here that inspire, or scare, depending on time available.

I just pulled the plugs and scoped out the pistons. All 8 look good to me. a little carbon but that's to be expected. No damage, no scaring , no marks. I also put the new starter in place, haven't bolted it in yet.I have to install starter and put intake back on before I do the belt. I think I'm going to do as you suggested, and put a belt on it and see where that gets me. What the hell, I aint got nothin but time.

I would certainly make sure you get it in time, before you stuck the belt on and rolled it over. I think you might get lucky.

The only issue I have right now is do I buy a whole new AISIN Kit, thats over $400, or do I just by a cheap belt. And if I do buy a cheap belt just to check the engine, at what point of reassembly can I try and start it?? I got an account at orielly's , I'll just take the belt back. And just trying a cheap belt......can I get it on using the old tensioners??.

I’m sort of wondering if a leak down test should be performed to get an idea of the general health of the engine before spending a day or two putting in a new timing belt.

For the Aisin full kit, $183 and free shipping from my preferred vendor, Summit Racing: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/asn-tkt-021

You NEED the kit that includes the tensioner, which ends on '-021'. Don't get the one ending '-001'.

Or better yet, just buy the Mitsuboshi timing belt and an Aisin tensioner and call it a day. Buy from Rock Auto or Summit for best results, price, and guaranteed authenticity.

How though? In order to do that, the cams would need to be set in proper time, and you'd need a way to add compression without them moving out of time, i.e. linking to crank pulley/HB is ideal. Unless I'm having a 'damn, shoulda had a 2nd cup of coffee today' moment, which is very realistically possible.

Good point; I forgot it was missing a timing belt. That alone in very disconcerting.

From a logical standpoint, it probably makes sense to buy the whole Aisin kit with the belt, water pump & pulleys/tensioner since even if the engine is toast, it can be reused along with the OEM starter on the used replacement engine which will need the timing belt redone anyway to start from a known point.

I took the front apart today, radiator, fan, WP, covers, etc. Found the belt. It was still on the pass side cam. Looks like it ripped a piece off on the drivers side cam. I brought the crank up to TDC. Turned DS cam to timing mark. Turned PS cam and stopped dead. UT OH!! push a little hard on it and SNAP! I guess a valve was stuck. Turned it to timing mark. I'm not sure on this. I'm having second thoughts. The drivers side cam, the only marks I could find were VERY faint. I think what Im seeing is the mark, but I'm not 100%. There is no indentation or line or dimple anywhere. Pass side has a indented line, so I know thats right. I'm gonna go ahead and order this kit, but I need a little guidance on setting this thing up. Should I turn these cams over a couple times, to make sure their free???
