Oil Filter Cap Assembly - Metal Upgrade

I put a light coat of old oil on it, just like I’ve done the traditional filters. Hope it’s enough. Dang! That sandwich would feed both my wife and me! Looks amazing!

 

I really wish Toyota would have just used a traditional spin-on filter on these trucks.

 

How in he double hockey sticks can transplanting a metal tube from one thing to another be asking for failure? Same shape, size and intended use, please explain.

 

I think it's pretty well detailed in this thread and the video has been posted at least once but probably twice. Basically That tube is not meant to be removed and once it is the cap is broken and should be replaced.

Oh, so the cheap knock off is the issue. I removed the tube from my plastic housing and put it in my toyota metal housing, so far so good.

 

I did this same mod on my 2019 4Runner. Exact same metal housing and P/N. Never had an issue. Not sure if it is necessary, but a cheap mod that has no negatives.

My only concern with that would be if you have to use a little filter like the one shown in order to maintain clearance. That would really reduce filtering capacity compared to the cartridge. And it's $280. I can deal with the slight inconvenience of my factory cartridge system twice a year.

That was my response on the YouTube video too. It looks like a high quality gizmo….and my truck is a 2wd with no skid plate, never goes off road so I could go with a longer filter but DANG! $279 to save a little mess and inconvenience? I change the oil once a year or 3,000 (which is all I drive the Tundra) so a little oil running down my latex glove isn’t a problem for me. If it was $79 I might consider it.

 

I've searched high and low (as a blind man) for this specific setup...where can I find it?

Considerable option, very expensive though. No idea if it would or wouldn't cause long-term damage to the engine.

just to have that ‘cool’ factor. HaHa! I still haven’t had time to do my first oil change on my truck.
I’m fairly certain after reading all this the plastic housing will stand the test of time, but it’s got 14 yrs and 320,000 kms on it so I’m at the mercy of whoever did prior oil changes. If they ever did……..

 

Brothers and sisters, if you're going to do this upgrade...please for the love of all things holy just spring for the Toyota OEM part and not some cheap version. I just bought my 17 Tundra and during my first oil change the cheap garbage cracked in two when I screwed it back in! I've never seen anything like it, and now my truck is out of service until I can get a replacement. Be warned!

 

Were you using the drain screw to screw the filter back in? I'm a proponent of just using the OEM plastic housing but many make the mistake of using the drain screw to screw in the filter housing instead of a filter wrench around the housing itself.

 

Eggzactly right. The drain plug needs all of about 5 lb-ft (60 lb-in) of torque.

 

I put the drain plug in while holding the filter housing in my housing so that I can't over tighten it.

 

No, I wasn't using it to tighten the main part. I was tightening that piece to it's specified torque and it just snapped. I've got these metal housings on 3 other toyotas here and know better. This was just a cheap Dorman replacement that came with my truck, and it's getting replaced with OEM asap!

 

Likewise. Right after the complete brake clean douche, dry out and new O ring install. And "ssshhhhhhhhh" don't tell anyone but I keep an extra Mama Toyota aluminum cap on the shelf............just in case.

 

I don't remember the Toyota metal base being very expensive- maybe $30? This doesn't seem like the place to save $1.99.

 

I have a 2021 Tundra SR5 SX package and it came with the metal oil filter housing, so thankful for that.

 

The dealer sells this part separately for anyone else that runs into this issue. I went ahead and got the assembly as well so that my truck is OEM again.

 

Definitely not part of any package, Toyota doesn't make a metal housing that fits without modification and I can't imagine a dealer doing that modification.

 

By modification, do you mean swapping the center screen piece into the metal housing? If so, that is true but it's a pretty easy swap if you really want the metal one. I went back with the plastic one because I'll be doing all my own oil changes on this truck, but for ones who can't do that I can see the metal housing bringing some peace of mind.

 

Yeah I know it's a minor modification but I can't imagine a Toyota dealership doing that and passing it off as part of some package. I've had no issues with the plastic one. Only time it becomes an issue is when it's overtightened.
