2003 ac 2wd ,my manual says type +4 trans fluid,dealer says dex ,now what?

whats a person to do ,want to drain and fill,129K on OD, fluid is still red/pink????

 

type T-4, or dex that is the Q???forgot dealer did a trans flush arround 60K,, previous owner,,, wonder what fluid that dealer used?

After you buy the truck (or sometimes before):

• Register for an account at the Toyota Owner's website: https://www.toyota.com/owners
• Plug your VIN number in and assign it to your account so you can check for open recalls, register yourself as the person to call/email in the event of a recall, and see any dealer-performed service history, including any frame inspections, recall work, regular maintenance, etc. This could give you a good idea of what the truck's had done already, where it lived, how regular the maintenance may've been.
• Start to get a baseline on critical 1st-Gen-Killer maintenance items that needed to be done: Timing belt/water pump/pulleys/tensioner. Radiator. OEM lower ball joints. Fluids: Differential(s), oil, power steering which takes ATF, brake, pink long life coolant, drain and fill transmission with correct fluid for your year (2000-02 takes DEXIII, 2003-04 takes Type T-IV, 2005-06 takes Type WS). Filters - you DO NOT need to replace transmission filter! For all other filters, stick with OEM, Toyota has specifically lenient flow characteristics that mate perfectly with their vehicles: Oil, air, and for 2000-2004 consider replacing with OEM fuel filter even though it's a PITFA. Check/replace plugs with the specific brand/model# printed in your owners manual.

If it was done at the dealer, they'd have run the VIN to confirm the fluid to use.

It's when a chain store does work you really need to worry. It'd be really unusual for the dealer to make a fluid mistake.

I got the impression my local stealership was just using WS in everything. If you try to order the Toyota PN for Dex III, it can’t find any match. My understating is GM no longer licenses Dex III since they stopped using it in 2005. DEX-MERC is supposed to be the same fluid as Dex III. Dex VI definitely is lower viscosity.

 

All Dex fluids are backwards-compatible by design. Higher number works fine with lower ordered designation, even if lower viscosity, the claim is, it functions fine and meets the minimum requirements of the lower rating. Do I believe it? “Meh”. I didn’t believe it when I first heard this but all the digging I did way back then confirmed it, back then at least.
