There’s the possibility the steering column was replaced by one from a salvage yard if the shifter aluminum assembly underneath the cover broke. A common problem on our trucks due to a poor design.

I laughed at first but winced when I saw the pictures… the backside picture it looks like may have been 100% submerged so won’t see any high water line. Good looking from drivers side though!
Following. Would love to see you resurrect it.

The OD/overdrive button at the tip of the shift lever also has a penchant for the wires rubbing open at the base of the shift lever. It's possible that happened, and they replaced the lever.

These trucks are trucks. They have a stack of known problems just like any other.

What the hell is up with the bed on the driver's side? Did he pop the bed off to change the fuel pump and not set it back down right instead of dropping the tank?!

I will say, that's a mighty fine stack of maintenance records in the seat... Why is the ead unit halfway out, and the blower motor on the floor?!

No water in the brake MC rez is a good sign. No obvious rusty clamps in the engine bay is another really good sign. Wonder what details the air filter would share with us?

why you wincing?? I'm telling you,.....this truck was not flooded, he left the windows down or some stupid shit like that. If this truck was flooded it would have mud and some remenence of whatever was in the water (No flood water is clean) and there is none. If this truck had anything in it, it was rain water. I will buy you a beer if I'm wrong, but I don't think I am. Years ago they brought me 5 Brand new concrete trucks that were flooded. Over the cab flooded. Them trucks stunk to holy hell when you opened the doors. And there was small debris all over and inside the trucks. There's always evidence, none with this truck,

I also noticed from your Facebook link that the cigarette lighter port is rusted so it may just have been exposed to the elements.

Worst case, OP could easily get his money back parting out the truck. A good frame will easily go for $1000-$1500.

Just because it was worse than I expected. I keep my stuff fairly clean so it was a bit jarring.

This is a good point, but if it took a temporary dive in the water/ditch/boat ramp/high tide, you're not going to see a ton of mud in the floorboards

    Since we're all just speculating...

All rational points. I'd add that yes, a short submersion at a boat ramp wouldn't cause mud accumulation, but also likely wouldn't cause the rusting/corrosion of the interior/cab parts. I'm leaning toward the OPs suspicion that it was left with windows down for months or years.

If it did get left with windows down for a prolonged period or otherwise picked up relatively clean water devoid of debris or dirt... Then it was surely closed up, while still wet, possibly in warm weather, to get THAT much corrosion (and mold) on different bits and pieces throughout.

Whoever gave up on that truck and left it in the yard with the windows down (if that really is what happened) is no better than those people who chain dogs up outside with no food or water. How do you drive a vehicle 280k and then just toss it out? Yes, my favorite story as a kid was Suzie Blue Coop...

OP, good luck fixing her up. To me it looks like you're in for a very long headache, but once you're done I'm betting you're gonna be hooked on this little JAP truck

someone who got in at the end of his shift with sweaty hands and grabbed the shifter on the low side of the shifter. Sweat on that stem over and over will get thru the painted finish and rust under it causing the paint to buckle up like you have. Seen this in other stuff where sweaty hands grab a handle, the handle is normally plastic but the steel painted rod always rusts right where those pinky fingers slip down to and touch. ATV and UTV in work settings, same thing happens to them, sweaty hands slip off the shifter and rust at the base of the plastic handle.

    That is odd.

    Yes
bed off, typical fashion of how you do a GM
i dont know anybody that drops the tanks......
At least they pulled the bed off and didnt cut a hole in the floor, seen that plenty of times too

You can see in the color of the drivers front window vs the drivers rear window. The green algae that grows on vehicle paint when they sit out under trees or in the elements for a long time is hard to hide, notice the whole truck including drivers rear window is covered in green algae from age but the drivers front window is cleaner. That truck had the front drivers window left down which is why the seats are covered in the algae from humidity over and over and rain and everything else.

I bought my daily driver almost 10 years ago like this, female driver putting on make-up probably, scraped down the side of a guard rail. She took it to a body shop who fixed the drivers side front fender and door and plastics. They gave the vehicle back to her and sent her on her way but none of the windows worked. Windows, sunroof, and rear window (4runner) were all MIA. Apparently she drove it about a year and got mad at it and parked it at her parents house and bought a honda civic to drive and left the 4R under a tree at her parents. I bought it green, clear coat almost eaten off, paint in horrible shape, drove to local auto parts store and went in and bought a test light and a pack of fuses and chased it down to see what was/wasnt working. Ended up taking it home and pulling drivers door panel off and the main harness going to the door panel switch panel wasnt plugged up. I plugged it up and everything worked, all windows were back operational. I bought that 4R with 122,000 miles and i still drive it today daily and absolutely love it.
