Reminder for 2020 owners with factory warranty still left, check your timing chain cover for an oil leak. Our trucks/engines are around that age where if you have the oil leak issue it can begin to show.

I'm at 77000 KM or 48000 Miles and the dealership just found a slight leak on the timing chain cover during the inspection.

My warranty runs out March 2025 so after some humming and hawing about the quality of dealership work, I called back and asked them to see if its covered and if they can do it, they confirmed and they booked me in right away with no hassle.

If you're familiar with this issue you know it can be a costly fix down the line. As its one of the few things known to go wrong with these engines it's worth checking it out while you still have warranty and save yourself thousands of dollars.

 

Is this a recall for this or is it documented? Thanks for letting us know. I have a 2021 with just 7000 miles on it but is good to check it anyway. I also have extended warranty for 10 years on it.

 

I have 49K on my 2020 and no issues at all.

 

Not a recall from what I know, but a common issue you usually need to go after Toyota pro-actively for.

 

If I ever get a cam tower seep I'm going to milk it until the end of time.

 

That’s a new issue for me.

 

I heard of it a few times just reading random stuff when I was researching what truck to buy, now that I actually have the issue and Googled it, it seems quite common.

Ahh Interesting. Something to definitely watch out for. Unfortuantely, my miles are way past factory warranty lol

 

I have a 2021 with 50k. It always smells a little like burned oil after I drive it. Sort of assumed it was just the undercoating. But that should have burned off a long time ago.

 

How long ago did you undercoat it?

I went a little crazy w my thickness of fluid film undercoat last yr and it stunk for like 2 months. Lol

 

I've had the timing cover seep for 5 years and dealer would not touch it as its not a leak. I just periodically check the oil level and all is good so far.

 

2020 Platinum with a little over 50k on it, no can tower or timing cover leaks visible. rear differential housing has some very light weeping around flange, just looks like stain, no liquid visibly leaking.

 

October 2022 was last time it was done.

 

I have tiny bit, but honestly I don't trust dealership to do a good job, I'll re-seal everything properly when building a new engine.

 

My biggest fear, but I am a pretty detail oriented person and I'll hold them accountable if anything related to it messes up.

Got the service completed a little while back, here is my quick review. They made no fuss about it being covered by warranty, they called me back right away to book it in and had my truck in for a total of 3 days and they provided me with a courtesy car for the duration.
I got the truck back in good shape! No weird noises or any strange feelings while driving it. I took the truck through its paces as well and tested out driving on the highway, some light 4x4, some quick starts and stops, and no weird behavior. Maybe I got lucky but I'm glad its fixed.

 

How come most people don’t like dealership service departments but when buying a used truck the fact it has “regular dealer service records” it’s a good thing?

 

I'm at 71k on my 2020. No leaks. No way to know if it has anything at all to do with it, but from the 1st OCI's on all my cars, I use HM oil formulations. It hasn't hurt anyway.

 

I echo the OP’s message. Took my 21 in yesterday for the timing cover repair under warranty. Truck has 48k at the time of diagnosis in Jan. 7, 2025. So, it’s being work on at the moment. Was told it would take up to 2 days for the work.
