3.4 I-Force engine failures.

4 months at the dealership getting short block replaced, very next day it’s leaking what appears to be coolant. Dropped it back off after 1 day

-What actually happened: Traveling at highway speed and engine shut off. I was able to restart it with limited power and pull over to a parking lot. Dashboard showed 'check engine' and vehicle would not start. Towed to dealer. Dealer called the following day and confirmed the engine needs to be replaced.

-Vehicle usage (towing/off-roading/pavement pounder): City and highway use. Tow a 3500 trailer for camping.

-Vehicle modifications (tune/geared/tires): none / stock

Other previous issues: none. Vehicle serviced at the same dealer that completes the trucks normal service schedule.

 

Welp… it’s early in the process but just got the call from the master tech that I will be needing a new engine.

2022 Platinum

-What actually happened: Traveling at highway speed and engine shut off. I was able to restart it and thought maybe I ran out of gas, it was low, but gas light wasn’t on yet. Wouldn’t start, waiting a couple minutes tried again and it started, drove to the nearest gas station, put about $20 in it (gas station was sketchy)
Pulled out and back onto the highway heading home. Acceleration felt slow, but nothing noticeably wrong. Took my exit and while idling at the light the truck sounded horrible and felt very rough. This next acceleration was awful and I called the dealer and told them I was heading that way. No engine lights, no alarms, just the initial “engine is stopped, find a safe place to pull over” or something like that.

-Vehicle usage (towing/off-roading/pavement pounder):Normal City and highway use. Have towed small camper and small boat in the past, but not in the last 10k ish.

-Vehicle modifications (tune/geared/tires): slightly bigger tires and a soft topper. That’s it.

Other previous issues: none. Vehicle serviced at the dealer during normal service schedule.

I am trying to lean towards a buy back if they try and just rebuild or replace. If anyone that has been through this can reach out and let me know their process, please let me know asap. THANK YOU!

2023 tundra hybrid limited
w/ TRD OFFROAD package

mileage: 36000km (22k miles)

build date: Jan 2023

What happened: rattling noises while on highway going 100km/h (62mph). Pulled over within a minute of the rattling noise.
When slowing down to a stop and at idle, it goes to a loud knock noise. Popped the hood and was extremely hot in the engine bay.
No current or previous problems. No signs or alerts or check engine light or temp light.

Vehicle use: Daily driver. Never towed, never offroaded. Rarely floored it. Never even engaged 4L

Vehicle mods: none. Everything stock/oem/original

Maintenance interval:Got the extended warranty so first few services were mandatory to be done at the dealer.
Followed their maintenance schedule. "service" every 8k km and oilchange every 16k km.

My vehicle at 36k km has gone for service 4x times and has 2x oil changes

Currently towed to the dealer and they are tearing it down to inspect the engine.
The service manager said this is their 3rd tundra they've had and the 1st that is a hybrid model.

I hope this whole thing gets resolved soon. Very frustrating.

 

2023 Tundra Limited

-Mileage that problem/failure happened: 44,852 on 7/17/24

-Build date: Unknown, but took delivery late-July, 2023.

-What actually happened: Drove for about 2 hours home on highway without a problem. Exited highway and heard engine knocking while at stop sign. Absolutely no indication prior to that. Was able to drive home (just down the street). Immediately could see oil dripping from engine. Checked the dipstick and it was full (ie engine hadn't been low, dealership confirmed).

-Vehicle usage (towing/off-roading/pavement pounder): Highway

-Vehicle modifications (tune/geared/tires): None

-Maintenance intervals: All <10k intervals per Toyota recommendations, had the 30k service done, too. All done at Toyota dealerships.

Toyota has said it needs a new engine. Estimating end of August, which would be about 6 weeks after failure.

Toyota is currently replacing the engine (including turbos) under warranty, NOT under recall. They're saying this truck was manufactured after February, so it's currently not under recall. I'd think they'd HOPE it's a recall issue - otherwise, they've two problems that are causing these engines to fail!

If it's under recall, they provide and pay for a rental car. As of now, I'm supposed to pay for the rental.

This is my 3rd Tundra. Other two were the 5.7L - drove to 250k+ and 200k+ with absolutely no problem. Currently also have a '19 Sequoia with the 5.7, no problems. Why oah why did they mess with near-perfection? 16 to 21 mpgs just doesn't seem worth these problems.

I sure hope Toyota does me right and pays for the rental. Until they tear it down they cannot claim it's an unrelated failure. Recalls are often expanded in timeframe, not condensed. Not only have I owned 6 Toyotas (4Runner and Highlander, too), but I've convinced a handful of other guys here in the Midwest to dump their domestics and move to Toyota. Toyota, I hope you're reading this...

-What actually happened: Hard acceleration to pass someone up. Right as I passed the car a warning message popped up telling me my engine shut off and to pull over. Dealership diagnosed it as needing a new engine.

-Maintenance intervals: 10k oil. 5k tire rotation and other fluid checks.

-What actually happened: Traveling to Minnesota from Colorado for vacation and to pick up new boat to bring back to Colorado. When I was about 100 miles away from Mankato, MN. I stoped for gas and when I started the truck after refueling I heard a ticking sound that would speed up and down with the throttle. The closest dealership was in Mankato,MN. I could not make it to them before they closed for the night. In the morning I started the truck so I could get to the dealership to take a look. When I was about 1 mile from the dealership I was going up a hill and gave some extra throttle and heard a big thud and warning lights and beeps and a prompt of low oil pressure and to pull over and shutdown vehicle. Was towed to dealership and was informed that they pulled the oil pan and there were chunks of metal in the pan. Dealership looked at the vehicle on 9/13/24. As of this post I have resolution on what can be done and I have fulll extended warranty purchased from dealer. I am currently on phone with Toyota Brand Engagement to see about shipping truck back to CO for repairs so I don’t have to fly or drive back to Mankato in few months. Also trying to get a resolution on a rental to get back to Colorado.

Yep - 27k miles on my 2022 Tundra 4x4 TRD Off-road SR5. NOT the iForce hybrid engine, but the 6 cylinder twin turbo. Highway and around town miles. Never abused, always maintained at the dealer. Never towed with it. No modifications other than a tonneau cover and leather Katzkin seat covers.

It's been at the dealer a month now, and still no word on when they'll fix/replace it. Originally told by the service department rep that it'll be about a month - spoke with a mechanic afterward and he laughed. Told me 3 months minimum - seems like it might be longer.

When it started failing, I thought maybe there was a frayed belt as it was making these weird and random ticking sounds. It still ran okay and never entered "limp home" mode. Took it in, got the call the next day: "Your engine's failing."

Been driving a rental provided by Toyota for a month now (a Dodge Ram 1500) and I'm just sick of it. Super shitty truck. I want my Toyota back.

 

Just had one towed Monday to my shop. 23 TRD PRO and since there is no recall on the hybrids Toyota is putting a short block in it. Parts are are at $25,977.317 right now

-What actually happened: main bearing said goodbye

Here's my just the facts version of what happened to me: I bought my 2023 Tundra 4X4 SR5 Crewmax 6.5 with about every premium option, technology and air suspension in November 2022. All stock, nothing but following maintenance schedule to the letter. On 10/18/24 with 16,851 miles the engine seized while accelerating uphill on the highway. Quiet failure, just an impotent rev that ended in warning chimes about pulling over and flashing dash messages saying Engine Stopped Steering Power Low. I tried to start it up again on the shoulder and got about 2 feet, but completely seized and wouldn't start again. I want to say I think I noticed some slight performance decline in fuel consumption and acceleration lag in the days proceeding. Nothing that gave me concern, but I had that nagging voice in my head that I bet my truck would be affected by the recall. It took 5 days to get a rental; the dealership is pretty cavalier about the whole thing, I don't feel like it's much of a priority for them. They told me I just missed the cutoff for engine ordering allocations so it's going to be a long time, said the only other one they'd seen has been waiting 3 months already. I am likely going to pursue trying to get into a 2025 but I'm going to have to reach out to Toyota because the dealership doesn't seem to want to do much for me past treating the trade-in as though it was fixed. Let me know if you want any pictures or documents to verify. I'm about to call Toyota customer care, their online message system doesn't actually work, the submit button is broken and they don't seem to have an email.

Edit: I got a call back from Toyota Customer Care; I was curious about if there was any additional remedy in consideration from Toyota, as was my sales associate, because why would he give me a deal if Toyota wanted to be generous? Toyota just said they would follow the letter of the warranty as expressed in the owner's manual and replace the engine. I wasn't expecting much more but really want out of this truck and into a 2025. Toyota rep steered me towards the explanation of lemon law buyback as the only alternative.

Edit2: I guess my engine is so seized up that there is a video of the local service department jumping up and down on it to show it won't move that's going around Toyota corporate. Toyota service contacted me expressly on behalf of Toyota to verify that my car was equipped with the auto stop/ start feature that turns it off at red lights. With that and the power surge like acceleration lag issues someone suggested to me auto stop is making out of phase parts, bending shaft to damage the bearing. It's just a theory, but I'd disable auto-stop if I still had a Tundra to worry about. Still looking at months to get it replaced and dealerships are doing so well in sales, they're not willing to talk to me about a fair trade-in so I'm just trying to get a better rental than the 3/4 ton base Ram fleet truck.

Edit3: I really have no idea about the auto stop start thing, realistically the issue is probably what they say it is about the swarf in the engine. I didn't see what was in the oil pan. I'm super frustrated already with zero repair timeline or transparency. I just submitted a repurchase claim to the NCDS with the hope Toyota let's me move on with my life.

Edit 4: The NCDS is a waste of time; they work for Toyota and are just meant to filter out some lawsuits. Toyota Corporate also won't do anything if your engine fails and you have months of loss of use, they treat you like anyone else in the recall. I got my car back just before the end of the year, about 67 days after it seized up. The new engine is fine so far, but we need to address some small fitment issues, hood gap, wheels rub, etc.

-Build date: 11/21

-What actually happened: got reduced engine power error while driving approximately 30mph. Pulled over checked the vehicle. Restarted it and it seemed resolved. Drove 40 miles home. I was driving very carefully because it was storming but I did notice it felt a bit sluggish once I got out of the storm and was driving 60mph. Two miles the error came back. Restarted vehicle and moments later got the following -
Reduced engine power.
Brake override malfunction
parking brake malfunction
pre-collision system malfunction
secondary collision system malfunction

My driveway is slightly inclined and the truck struggled to pull in/up.

Called Toyota advocacy because the dealership blew me off. They escalated the case and the person assigned at the dealership told me to drive it on the highway (30 miles) to drop it off. Was also told that he alerted my husband about the recall when he was in for the service (not true). They finally towed it and gave us a rental. They have had it for over two months.

-Maintenance intervals: regularly. The truck was in 5 days prior for the 40k service

Just wanted to update the situation.

I just got my tundra back today from the dealer.
The vehicle was towed in July. 25, 2024. And I picked it up Oct. 30, 2024. whole 3months.
Obviously the damaged tundra was a crappy situation, but the dealer made it as smooth as they could.
They gave me a brand new 2024 tacoma as a loaner for the 3 months. Parts took a long time to source as a lot of them are all special order.

I attached a list of the parts they replaced. On page 3 of the documents, it seems like it was indeed metal shavings and damaged bearing.
New turbos and New engine block rebuilt
Wouldn't be surprised if this cost them $30k+ (canadian)
It seems like the warranty package I purchased warranties the powertrain up to 200k km (125k miles). So I have some peace of mind for a while....

I'm glad I have it back but have no idea if this will be a reoccurring problem...
I hope this new engine will last a lot longer but I've a feeling that these are all original parts and not updated/ revised parts. Very worried in that regard.
If anyone could shed some light regarding this, that'd be great!

This is a Hybrid i-force MAX version. And I believe it still isn't officially on the recall list?

 

Update:

Got my truck back today from the dealer with a replaced engine. Told it was the whole engine, not just a short block. Drove it home. Didn't fail. Probably going to have to sell it, which bums me out. I do like the Army Green and they don't make that anymore.

 

2022 Toyota tundra hybrid- limited 4x4

I have been bringing my truck in for 2 years (since the first servicing) regarding knocking in my engine and randomly losing power for a few seconds while accelerating. I brought these issues to my Toyota dealership (right Toyota) prior to the recall for these engines going out.
My service department did some type of ECU tune to try and stop the knocking, however it just made my MPG worse (still have all the same issues). My truck has not died yet, however I’m extremely concerned on how to handle this with Toyota, as it seems like the only way I’d be able to get them to acknowledge these problems is if my truck dies. I have an appointment to take it in the 26th of this month.
Any recommendations on how to handle this would be greatly appreciated!

dealer said theyve talked to toyota and they cant get it moved up so they asked me to call and try...no luck...they cant give me a timeline..Toyota brand engagement is talking about buyback if I’m interested. But I’m not / I have tons of after market mods. They’d have to swap everything shocks,
Lift, trim to fit 37s. I said what if engine replacement takes 12 months? They said then it takes 12 months...what am i supposed to do? i am just at a loss and not sure what to do or how long this will even take? Sounds like they’re only replacing February ‘22 builds and I’m September 1st! any advice? I asked what if I buy a new engine can’t they reimburse me? They said no.
Also I’m in California, yes I’m aware of Lemon law and it’s on my side but I’m on a lease (didn’t know if we’d keep it , hubby wanted to keep it after lease so he made mods on it) anyways.. advice? Thoughts? Knowledge on remedy for September builds?

loss of power engine stalled while driving approx 50 mph. Started back up with a loud knocking . Toyota roadside has it towed to dealership and driver did not strap correctly resulting in smashed front end on way to dealership.

Toyota is acting like I have to fight it out with third party tow company they hired to get collision repair

engine has been replaced for two weeks but I still have not seen truck. Toyota Roadside Assistance is trying to repair front end with non OEM parts

Just a heads up Toyota will not help you and they don’t give a damn about their customers

-What actually happened: While driving in regular conditions, engine suddenly shuddered and display read parking sensor error and check engine error. Called dealer right away and they scheduled my engine replacement(had already received letter that I was part of the recall), however, the first opening they had was in two months. The engine was still driving normally, without power loss, and they told me it was safe to drive as long as the 'check engine' light wasn't flashing. About 10 minutes later, I lost power and the display read "reduced engine power". I called the dealership back and said I'd be dropping my truck off Monday. They agreed, will run a diagnostic Monday and let me know if they can give me an earlier appointment date.

-Vehicle usage (towing/off-roading/pavement pounder): Daily driver and tow a 5000lb trailer during camping season.

-Vehicle modifications (tune/geared/tires): 1 3/4" lift and Toyo AT3's. OEM Pro duel exhaust and TRD intakes.

-What actually happened:I was driving normally down the interstate merging into traffic when i felt a slight shutter almost like a mis shift then it went away. Then 1 min later a warning came up and said engine had stalled and to pull over. Luckily i was able to get over without issue.

-Vehicle modifications (tune/geared/tires): 2inch Dobinsons lift 35 inch tires.

Well I joined the list today. Was hoping I would never be on it. 2023 Toyota Limited. Bought it from Toyota dealership used certified. Had 19,000 miles on it. It is currently at 24,000. This is the second time I towed the trailer that’s less than 5000 pounds, with it. The first sign was engine shut off while I was going 65 miles an hour on a highway 4 days ago. This time driving through Virginia mountains heard a knocking noise sounded like a can full of rocks. Was able to pull off into the parking lot of a nearby Walmart just in time for the engine to shut off and die on me. Had a towed to nearest Toyota dealership. They won’t be open until Monday morning. Stuck 4 1/2 hours away from home with RV parked at an RV park, due to check out of here on Tuesday. This should be a memorable trip. The truck is stock, no modifications to suspension or the engine no tuners. Always used either Costco or Sunoco gas. Had it maintained at Toyota dealership on schedule maintenance.

They contacted Toyota, I guess they will wait for the engine to get shipped. Said it might take 1-2 weeks. Meantime gave me 24 Tacoma iforcemax trd sport to drive around. Even tho it has high HP and Torque #’s for such a small truck, it still doesn’t compare to how Tundra pulls you. Well not my tundra, that one is dead.

 

Just to add to this thread... 10 day and 1270 mile old 2025 (5/25 production date); loss of power/stumbles and sounds like every moving part in the bottom end is trying to escape. Got towed to a dealer this evening, and I'm hoping they can give me a loaner in the morning...

-What actually happened: Accelerated quickly to not slow up traffic behind me after pulling on to my main road.

-Vehicle usage (towing/off-roading/pavement pounder): mostly pavement pounder. 60ish miles a day for work. I did tow a 6k lb camper a few times but sold that. Pretty much highway driver now.

-Vehicle modifications (tune/geared/tires): none. Completely stock. Hadn’t even had to change the tires yet.

-Maintenance intervals: 5k always. Maybe one time I did the suggest 10k…

not sure if this is even tracked or needed but I had been following this and forgot about it though… longtime lurker few time poster created my account when I got the gen 3… remembered and came back to get my post in… got lucky I was close to home and close to my dealer. They were fast in responding and should hopefully get my engine in soon and just waiting on Toyota to approve it all but I should have been on replacement schedule soon anyway I believe…

2023 Tundra TRD bought in July 2023.

Mileage:51,000

What happened: Was driving home from Vermont to NJ doing around 85 and check engine/low oil pressure warnings came on and engine shut down telling me to pull over. I coasted quite a while looking for a reasonable spot to pull over on the NY Thruway. It was 92 degrees and I had two dogs with me. I tried to restart it to a clunking and knocking with no power.

Had it towed to my house then the dealer.

Usage: Daily Driver for work and road trips/vacations. No work, off-road or towing.

Modifications: None other than more aggressive tires than the factory tires replaced at 38k

Maintenance: minimal. I did the dealers 10k and 25k as it was free. Since then I’ve only changed oil at their recommended interval.

Problem: unknown and I don’t know if the dealer will dig any deeper. They removed the heads and found that the cylinder walls were scored and ordered a new motor from Toyota. Will see in about a month and a half hour that turns out.

 

Hi all, I experienced the failure while traveling on vacation in CO on July 18, 2025.

2023 Tundra TRD OR, purchased new in August 2023.

-Build date: 06/23

-What actually happened: I was on vacation in Colorado (live in KY). While accelerating, I received a "low oil pressure" warning. A loud engine knocking sound began. I pulled over to the nearest parking lot and restarted the car. The knocking sound continued, so I immediately shut it off and requested a tow truck to the nearest dealer in Denver. While the dealer tech was moving the truck from the parking space the tow truck dropped it in to the service bay, the engine seized. The dealer explained they will need to order a complete new small block from Toyota, which will take several months. It took 6 days to get a rental car to return home to KY. I have opened a case with Toyota requesting a replacement or buyback.

-Vehicle usage (towing/off-roading/pavement pounder): Primarily a pavement pounder. Towing every few months (under 5k, primarily uhaul trailer or flatbed with mower).

-Vehicle modifications (tune/geared/tires): Stock, 275/60/20 Falken Wildpeak

-Maintenance intervals: All performed as requested by Toyota. When I received a notification from the truck or dealer, I scheduled the appointment and brought it in.
