How do i tell if my cv axels are oem?

    Noticed that both of my boots are ripped. have not noticed any noise from them. If i know they are originals i would like to just replace the boots with Toyota's boot kit. I did this on my fj and i think the shaft was an aftermarket one because the boot was a little loose on the differential side. I checked on the maintenance history and don't see anything about replacing them.

    Here's factory. Note the band/label with part number. Also note the sling, typical after lifting.

    And here is an OEM remanufactured, note the label is foil "TOYOTA", and they painted the inner / outer sections with gloss black paint.

    I just noticed the grease on both of the LCA's after i lifted it and figured that the new angle of the shaft ripped the already worn boot. Does that make sense? I will look when i get home but i kind of remember a pink sticker on one of them . And yes i do live in the Rust Belt.

    It is very common to sling grease after lifting. Doesn’t mean your boots are shot. They may just need a reclamp. That’s one of the tips in the wheels/suspension section of the megathread community sticky. https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

    Great thank for the tip, i will look at them closer, should i try to add some grease before putting new clamps?

    I mean, if it were me, after unclamping, I'd carefully slide the boot back, with cardboard underneath me, to check how much is there.

    If the joint looks dry, as in you can see shiny metal staring back at you, I'd smear compatible grease all up inside the joint, since it's not going to achieve the same effect just dumping it into the boot.

    This means buying compatible grease in advance. Some say the NAPA CV grease is great. Others say GKY H-15. In the Toyota re-boot kit, the part numbers on the bag are 10222673 for the thicker, darker grease, 10077610 for the thinner brown one. Thinner one typically goes on the side with needle bearings, IIRC. Thinner allows flowing into said bearings. I remember "Thinner is inner" and that's the winner.
