My cam shaft position indicator sensor is damaged, the wires are frayed just below the timing belt cover. Is this safe to drive to the mechanic? No check engine light at this time and is running ok for now.

Looks like a wiring shield is frayed. I'd say it's ok to drive.

If it is a shielded wire the outer braided jacket is for 'noise' suppression. Sensitive signals can be interrupted or corrupted by high voltage pulses like spark plugs or large magnetic currents like alternators. The shield acts as a drain for interference from outside sources and will be grounded at one end of the wire.

Thanks. I may try and wrap it with some high temp electric tape to buy some time.

I'd be more concerned with that oily mess surrounding it.

This is a common-enough issue and is touched on in the new owner/potential owner megathread.

You should replace the sensor. The end result will ultimately be throwing codes, and engine potentially not running properly. I don't think the ECU will shut the engine down over no signal from cam sensor, but not sure with the 5VZ-FE that's in your truck.

If it starts & runs - go for it. I had rodents chew threw mine last spring (actually got my runner and a sequndra next to it) - just spliced the wire back and all good. When fully cut it will just spin over. Oh and my rodents did not 'chew' - it was a simple straight bite right threw the wire.

Thanks for the helpful info everyone. @Riverdale21
I took the timing belt cover off and just wrapped it up and @ATBAV8 your right about the dirt and oil! I plan to do a valve gasket cover replacement, so that is next on my list and will replace the sensor then.
