Why flush if even remotely concerned. Just drain and fill the thing. I thinks that’s what most shops would do anyway. I had mine serviced at like 130k I think ( bought it at 116k) and now going to next week again at 193k. They are going to drop the pan too, I got some seepage going on and get that fixed. Gonna be more expensive but I love my truck and rely on it.

I’m definitely due for another service, I’ve been hard on her this summer pulling a heavy trailer everyday.

other oils and fluids were done around that time too. Take care of those next.

I completely agree with John that extremely delayed maintenance isn't going to fix a failing transmission.

At Tundra-talk, he addresses the main context of when people wonder if they should do a full flush: when they buy trucks that have 100-150k miles on them with no transmission service records.

He says if the fluid isn’t maintained, then a drain and fill is appropriate.

It's not an "old mechanic's tale" to say at 100-150k miles, the clutch packs are probably worn a bit and do get some help from impurities in the fluid (not full-on sludge ) for grip.

Speaking of, what's his preference for fluid maintenance? :monocle: Drains/fill every 24k miles.

The entire point with @2011Tundra200thousandkm is that he doesn’t know if his fluid has been maintained AT ALL in 124k miles. At that point, and in light of John's posts, I would just keep doing drain/fills.

I also, again, had torque converter shudder in a 5th gen 4Runner at 130k after a full flush with Toyota WS at a Toyota dealer. It had no transmission service records and ZERO symptoms prior; I just thought it would be a good idea to flush it out for new fluid. It’s possible it was a coincidence, sure. And I’m sure it would have gone another 100k at least with the hesitation going into 5th gear. It wasn’t ultimately why I traded the 4Runner in.

I’ll pass on the power flush - I also don’t pressure wash my engine.

I don’t have a need or want for a power flush when the vehicle can do the same thing in a “safer” manor

I was super impressed after doing the 4r first with no real cooler, and then my 150k mile untouched trans fluid in the truck, it took soooooo long to get up to fluid level check temp!!!! I even covered the cooler with a towel but that didn’t do much, it was crazy!

I would've thought your ambient temp in AZ is pretty much the level check temp. :bananadead:

I’m poking fun at millions of people living where there is routinely not enough water for people to live normally.

We have more than enough here. 50-60 inches per year. All I have to do is wash my truck, and it rains.
“This city is a monument to man’s arrogance!”

Thank you for the vote of confidence. I will throw my two cents in here. Take it for what it is worth.

First off, like others have said, you are not outside of what Toyota recommends for this transmission. First fluid replacement is at 60,000 miles. What they mean by this it a drain and fill, not a complete replacement.

If it were mine, I would do a drain and fill now. That would tell me a couple of things.
    1. The general condition of the fluid that is in there. Yes it will be dark.
    2. That I now know that the level of the transmission is good because I just made sure.

I would follow this up with a drain and fill at 75,000 and then at 90,000 mile. From there I would do every 30,000 miles.

I would only use the Toyota WS fluid. Nobody else is authorized to make Toyota ATF.

On transmissions with higher mileage.... I would not hesitate to do a drain and fill at any mileage. I have revived several Japanese transmissions by doing some very intentional drain and fills to clean things up. It takes several drain and fills over several thousand miles but they respond well to some fresh clean fluid. I have even started out by draining three quarts and putting two of the old back in with one new. The key is to slowly work out the old junk with some fresh detergents.

General rule of thumb for a transmission that is a mess:
    1. Drain and fill (typically about three quarts)
    2. Drive for 1,000 or so miles - focus on longer drives that get the trans up to temp
    3. Drain and fill
    4. Drive another 1,000 miles
    5. Drain and fill
Typically performance starts to improve at about 500 miles after the first drain and fill.
You are trying to free up sticky shift solenoids. They get sluggish with too much particulate loading in the fluid. This happens after the fluid get saturated and is no longer able to carry more particulates. Adding new fluid allows the fluid to start picking the particulates up. Adding smaller amounts of fluid allows this to happen slowly.

Feel free to let it fly :) I love a good discussion.
