    Howdy Guys,

I had my 2022 SR5 malfunction today. 73,775 miles on the odo, mostly highway miles, light towing, maintenance routinely performed by Toyota service, per their recommended service intervals with the exception of a 1k mile oil change that I asked for.

While passing on a two lane highway the power dropped out. A message appeared saying “check engine reduced engine power visit your dealer”. When I tried to give it more power the truck would shutter horribly. I took pics of the dash and a video of the rough idle (sounded like a mini diesel) once I got stopped and was waiting on a call back from the dealership. There was a burning smell once I got out of the truck somewhere between burnt oil/electrical. It was an odd smell. There was a check engine light that was flashing and the infotainment screen was giving warnings to call dealer. I turned the truck off and immediately restarted it to no codes and a smooth idle.

I started driving towards the dealership. I drove the truck for approximately 6 miles and by this time had my wife behind me so decided to give it some throttle again to see if it would replicate. This time the truck completely shut off. No power steering, no brakes, but everything inside was working…dash, screen, ect. I was able to get the truck restarted again and drove slowly the rest of the way to the dealership.

the truck has had a intermittent rough idle since I purchased it new. The dealer has never been able to replicate the issue. So nothing has been done to remedy this.

I came home to the notice in the mail that my truck is one of the affected vehicles for the engine replacement.

The dealership is going to diagnose tomorrow, but my advisor (who has been great to work with for the last couple of years) does not think this issue is related to the engine malfunction since the truck restarted and was able to drive to the dealership.

any thoughts or similar situations? Everything I have been able to find seems to be trucks that shutoff for the reduced engine power and then require a tow into the dealership.

I will try and post the videos of the dash and engine idle.

Sorry to hear this. Most important thing is that you're safe, especially since you said there was no brakes and no power steering.

Not sure what exact issue your truck is having, but the only one issue that is known about this engine is the motor loosing power and bearings are spun/seized. The only other issue is turbos, but that seems to be rare.

Make sure to push for long block (as per recall) if they need to replace the engine and try to avoid them rebuilding with the short block.

Newer engines are a big ball of sensors. Any of which can throw itself into limp mode to protect itself. The causes are pretty vast from trivial to total FUBAR

the dealer did tell me that my truck will be receiving a full new engine per the recall whenever available, regardless of what todays outcome is. That is somewhat reassuring. The rough idle has made me nervous since owning the truck.

I have found one other thread that had the total failure and in the few days leading up to complete failure he started having very similar issues to what happened to me yesterday. Truck would die, restart, keep driving, until it didn’t. Regardless, my truck is for sure one of the 100,000 that are part of the recall so there is a good chance that this is what happened/is happening. The dealer did confirm the truck would be part of the recall.

sounds like the guy who had a misfire, there is a thread around there somewhere with it

with that many miles, did you do your plugs at 40K? should be almost to the second set

No word back from the dealer yet on the issue. Hopefully I will have answers early next week.

Any change in oil pressure that you noticed?

I was able to grab a picture of the gauge from the Live Photo. I believe that is pretty much where it has always read.

Looks about normal for warm engine and 2k rpm to me too.
    Good luck at the dealer.

Oil pressure looks low. At idle warmed up that would be normal, at 2k it usually reads in the middle.

Same, I think my pressure gauge only looks like that at idle and stopped at a signal.

    Lots of stuff!
My oil pressure gauge sits at that point as well. It might pop up to halfway when first started but will sit at about 1/4 afterwards.

There were some issues with these analogue gauges with the early trucks and I think a TSB came out. I took mine in to see about the gauges including the fuel gauge and the service department didn't know anything about the issues so I handed them a print out of the TSB and after a while they told me that Toyota hasn't given them the software to fix the issue but check back in 6 months!

If the oil pressure drops to a dangerous level, I am sure the gauge would be the last thing to tell you. You should see the red oil light pop up first.

This would be a good place to add a Scangauge or additional gauges that actually work.

I am not too sure how accurate the digital gauges in the digital cluster are, but I am sure they look cool!

Just received a call from Toyota. They cannot replicate the issue, however there is a code for a misfire on multiple cylinders. They are thinking bad fuel, and are pulling fuel samples shortly.

Careful, another member on here had his dealership blame it on bad gas and refused warranty. Had to pay out of pocket and now is in litigation.

Either way I am out of warranty and will still be receiving a new engine once the recall is rolled out. If it is bad fuel the gas stations insurance should cover the bill, per the dealer. We will see.

    its not bad gas, geez..

thats really rare and it usually involves water penetrating the system somewhere and you have a lot full of dead cars all at once.

Bad gas is the excuse they use when they can’t figure out what the problem is. Exactly what happened to the other member. He had the gas tested and turned out not to be the cause. Toyota wouldn’t cover the warranty blaming gas. Insurance wouldn’t cover the repair saying the gas was ok. No one left to flip the bill other than the owner. You might want to get a sample from the tank. Don’t take their word because it’s probably BS. Also your powertrain warranty is longer. 5yr/60k I believe.

I got one of these last week. When I hooked a code reader up I pulled a "P25B4" code. Turbo A Wastegate stuck closed. Dealer is replacing the passenger turbo this week.
My Mfg date is 03/2022, Mileage @ turbo Failure 25,250

Hopefully yours is "nothing" and it continues to stay nothing until your engine gets replaced...

You ever do your plugs? 40k is the interval on the truck.
I hope they get it all squared away for you. And yeah blaming gas is a real excuse. Ask them for a sample.

Different gauge set on mine but here's the reading on mine. Motor fully up to temp at idle on level ground. I'm about 3/4 at 1500rpm when the motor is cold. FWIW.

Yowsa, that's some really bad gas. Damn, here in Phx I'm pretty sure that's how the test would show the water coming out of my garden hose. How much did it cost you?
