When I did the first oil change at 5k miles on my 23 Tundra in December, I sent an oil sample to Blackstone for an oil analysis. I just received the oil report back (4 1/2 weeks later) and Blackstone states the excess metal is typical during the break-in period and will probably wash out with time. I'm going to religiously track these oil analyses as more 3rd gen Tundra owners are reporting V35A engine failures. I opted not to do the TBN/TAN properties testing as I intent to do the oil changes at 5k mile intervals. Sorry for all the redactions.

Thanks for that, I wish I had sent my first two changes out. Here’s my 3rd oil change at 15k miles for reference. It should level out for you soon

Did you by chance notice any "glitter" in your oil pan after the first couple of changes?

I will do another oil change in a total of 3k miles and see what it looks like.

Have subsequent oil changes still had this “glitter”?

The dealer did the first one so I couldn't validate that. I did the second one and saw glitter. After the second one I did drain about a cup out of the pan just to see and there was also some glitter but its a small sample and the bottom of the pan. I am keen to know what the 3rd change will look like. I am only at 3300 miles and will wait another 1-2k to change.

Update: Just did another oil change at 4,150 miles. The oil had about 1,900 miles on it and honestly looked much darker than I would have thought. I did tow 2 times with about (5k lbs and 8k lbs) about 50 miles total each time.

Used Pennzoil Platinum 0w-20 with OEM Filter.

I still had "glitter" but I believe it was less than before. How much less? I don't know. I was just observing what I could at the bottom of the pan. It did seem gritty and I am quite disappointed the OEM filter did not catch all this.

I cut the filter open and didn't notice any larger specs like I did on the 2nd oil change. The dealer did the first one so who knows what came out.

So all in all I think the glitter is slowly going away and I am happy about that. Seems like after 4k miles the engine is still being broken in. Moving forward I will switch to either Purolator Boss or WixXP.

Did my first oil Analysis, did a oil change at 1000, 3,000, and this one at 5713 miles (going on trip so changed it before 3K miles), using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Full Syn.

Would love to see someone's report over the course of 15-20k and see the subsequent changes and drops in metals. Just for comparison. I know others have posted 1 or 2 reports which seems fine. But its good to see validation from other samples taken over time.

When you drain an oil pan through the drain bolt, some oil remains along the bottom of the pan. The “glitter” will also stick to the bottom of the pan and not be cleared by merely draining.

Thanks OP! Seems to me like this is further evidence supporting a break in oil change at 2-3K?

All great info and like the commentary Blackstone gives - especially since we have to watch for those potential points of failure. I might make up a google sheet and start a longer-term trend thing as I do my results. (First oil change in a few weeks- 2,000 mi).

Got my report back today from 1k mile oil change. Not sure why they made the comment about 3.4 engine. Maybe I wrote the incorrect size on the form…

At least Toyota has submitted a voluntary recall.

The 2nd oil change is looking promising as no signs of debris in my oil. Hopefully, I 'm out of the woods. Nevertheless, I had to cancel a road trip to Yellowstone this year because of this recall.

As much as I'm a huge fan of oil analysis and I've had it save me major repairs, I think these tests are turning out to be pretty dull other than silver which is inconclusive. In my experience, when you have a wear problem you see if far in advance with the analysis a big way. I wonder if the bearing fails somewhat without warning or a lot of wear metals being disbursed? Or, this is a relatively low sample count which is against a fairly low % of units failing? Still, it's odd that we haven't had one test I've seen that lit up the dials.

I have driven umpteen vehicles hundreds of thousands of miles and never worried about oil analyses TBH. Regular oil and filter changes with good quality oils is all that I have ever done, but I did this just for my academic interest only. I am going to do a few more just for the heck of it. If my factory installed self-destruct device detonates, I will worry about it if and when it does.

I agree. I've never used it much for cars. Always and often for boats and generators.
Also agree on worrying about the engine if and when it does.
