I am new to this site. I have a 14 5.7 iforce. My plan is to use it for my retirement pulling a 5th wheel. It’s for 220,000 miles. I have worked on many gm and dodge. Overbore, bigger cam, tuning. Toyota seems to be different. Please comment with ideas that will help me build my tundra up to where it needs to be for my retirement years. Reliable and powerful.
    Thanks

    Larry…

How big of 5th wheel you talking? Might be nothing you can do in the power department to tow a 5th wheel......

1/2 ton trucks and 5th wheels don’t belong together and it has nothing to do with making it go. Tundra does not have a free floating rear axle and is not a heavy duty truck.

Ok, I am at a place where I am going to re build my 5.7. What do I need to get for the job. A mangas supercharger? Or another brand. What size pistons, forged? What can should I go with. Full headers, cold air intake?. I have been out of the engine building for a while. I have been working for 40 years. Please bring me up to speed.

Okay, let's back up before spending $15k on the parts you just listed...

Do you already have the 5th wheel you are trying to pull? If so what is the exact model?

I didn't want to say it, but there is probably only 1 5th wheel made that comes close to being behind any 1/2 ton.

I understand about the rear axle. How can I upgrade it to handle the job?

A new truck is going to cost 100,000. I can spend 25,000 or less and have the equivalent.

No - you can’t. It isn’t an HD truck.

OP it sounds like you're trying to spend an exorbitant sum of money to try and make a 1/2 ton truck capable of tasks a 3/4 ton truck should be used for. You're better off just selling the Tundra and buying a 3/4 or 1-ton truck.

And you'll quickly exceed the $25k budget trying

Remember there are used HD trucks out there. You could get one with lots of life left for that $25k budget you've set out. You could get a much better one by adding the additional funds you could make selling the Tundra

Keep in mind too that the payload, towing and axle ratings for your Tundra are set in stone by the manufacturer. No modifications will change those.

All that's to say that if you tow overloaded (and by overloaded I mean weight beyond the manufacturer's set limits), and you get in a wreck, you'll likely be held liable even if it isn't your fault. It's really easy to be overloaded in these trucks because the payload limits are quite lousy. That's not a good retirement plan

It’s ok to want to use the Tundra to pull a camper. Lots of people like to use their half tons for everything—daily driving, towing, hauling, ect—because they don’t want to have to drive an HD rig. Problem is, as others have said, this is a half ton truck, and there are no mods you can do that will make it a 3/4 or 1 ton truck.

Having said that, there are tons of bumper pull trailers out there with tongue weight that the Tundra can handle. I am looking at tandem axle trailers under 7500 lb GVWR.

    You could:

    • install a supercharger
    • add the Alcon big brake kit
    • Deaver U748 leaf packs plus RAS RoadActive Suspension
    • LT Michelin Defenders
