A question came up today separately, so thought I'd put the answer up here to help clarify things.

Do I need the HRN-RR-TO3 or the HRN-HRR-TO3 harness for the Maestro? A similar question applies to the Gen2 with the "TO1" harness and the Gen2.5 2014-2019 trucks with the "TO2" harness.

As shown in the flow chart, the RR harness is not "Plug and Play" while the HRR harness is. But what does that mean exactly?

The RR harness looks like this. You have bare wires for the speaker connections and you will need to connect all of these bare wires to the harness(es) that came with your radio.
    upload_2024-5-23_20-20-6.png

The HRR harness looks like this. It has a connector with all of those wires running into it. That connector means you will need to buy another harness (specific to your head unit) that will go between that connector and the head unit.
    upload_2024-5-23_20-20-43.png

Here is the Alpine harness (as an example). The purple arrow connector will mate up with the HRR purple arrow. The teal arrow connector will go directly into the back of the head unit (replacing the harness that came with it).
    upload_2024-5-23_20-22-1.png

Do note that if you use the HRR, that doesn't mean you won't still have wires to splice...just a few less of them. Also know that the connector between these two harnesses takes up some space that you might not otherwise need if you were to stagger your splices and shorten up the wires a bit.

I’ve been just crimping terminals on the ends of my Pioneer pigtails. Then inserting them directly to the Toyota connectors. Makes for a clean install with or without maestro. Last few have been without (dad’s ‘04 RAV4 and ‘06 Tacoma).

On older vehicles where there’s no real integrations between the vehicle and the HU, that’s a great way to go (even newer rigs if just connecting directly from the HU to the factory speaker wiring).

Anyone else having an annoying issue when changing XM stations up/down using the steering wheel buttons? When I hit the button it switches to a screen with icons for the stations you can scroll left/right. After you've selected a new station there is a few seconds pause and it changes back to the main XM screen. Problem is that the the sound cuts off during the screen change. Occasionally it doesn't cut out, but most of the time it does.

Has anyone found a way to add PID’s to the RR2? I got a Sony XAV-AX4000 with the rr2 installed yesterday. I’d really like to get rid of my scan gauge and use just the head unit but it won’t read trans temp.

Alright I have one for you guys.

    Alpine F511
    2020 W/ JBL

    • My compass on my dash isn’t working
    • When I hard wire my iPhone into the CarPlay port, it charges my phone but I get a message that says cannot connect to device
    • Clock on alpine doesn’t work
    • When I try to wirelessly connect to CarPlay, it says my GPS antenna isn’t connected.
      • I’m connected to the white OEM connector with the pigtail from discount electronics
      • XM is working so I should have the right antenna, right?
I have torn this thing apart a few times now and am now seeking help from the pros. Anyone run into something like this yet? IMG_9836.jpg IMG_9837.jpg IMG_9835.jpg

The compass on the dash was driven by the nav unit in the factory HU, and I don't think you get that back. I use that as my default dash gauge as well, so it's gonna suck a bit when I get a new HU.

You did install the additional GPS antenna, not just the stock XM one, right?

I used the adapters rainman found to connect to the oem antennas. I didn’t use the additional antennas for either the gps or XM

Should be good then. I used the factory XM and the GPS from the Alpine. But as long as you have the 2, I would assume it's good.

You’ll lose the instrument panel compass. It’s tied to the factory HU Nav, not much else you can do but get a dash compass or replacement rear view with the integrated compass.
    upload_2024-6-1_19-35-52.png

As for the others, it sounds like a loose connection. White is correct for the GPS (same color as the adapter cable).
And are you 100% sure you’re connecting hard wire to the CarPlay USB cable (one works for CarPlay, one doesn’t).

Finally installed the ILX-F511, bypass module, and hdmi/usb port. Thanks to those that posted their experiences. I really found post #8 and #249 helpful trying to figure out how to connect the bypass module. Also, the YT video how to take the dash/glovebox apart to route the hdmi/usb port.

I have only taken out the head unit 8 times. One more time to get the screen closer and I will be done for the installation part.

No, I don't know about iPhone personally. I did see a few YT videos where people screen mirrored with the lightning cable. For my android phone I'm hardwired via hdmi to usb-c. I imagine if you use a similar cable for iPhone it should work the same.

Well 6 months later I finally got the 9” installed in the 4R!!!! The most difficult part seemed to be pulling most of the dash to fish stuff thru, you almost have to take every panel off just to get to one you need
Big thanks to @TRDFerguson and @AT x AT for the help with installing! And thanks to @Uncle Bif for the head unit!

    Need some help.

Ordered this. And now I'm trying to figure out what to do with these wires.

The USB adapter, what is that for? It doesn't plug into my head unit does it? I don’t see a USB plug.

Did your antenna connector require wiring in the blue wire for power? If so, where do I do that?

The other two shown not used are gps and xm right? I appear to have a different gps antenna and plug in?

Will the xm adapter suggested on page one work for the oem xm antenna with thus HU?

Did anyone's back up connecter have to literally be forced on? Mine required scary force.

Post with pics and me begging for help is here - https://www.tundras.com/threads/need-some-help-with-my-kenwood-dmx1057xr-install.148413/

How is everyone changing the boot screen for the dmx1057xr? The threads referencing carboncarsystems website and download the file seem to be OBE. That site is no longer operational from what I found and the download doesn't exist.

I know the file size must be 1200x720 and your thumbdrive has to be FAT 32 formatted. But when I tap two top left and two bottom left and the one tap top left and bottom left, all the custom options on that "secret" screen show red with NG in the center.

EDIT - answer is in here.
