I pulled the chute some time back so I wouldn’t deal with this. Looking like a better decision all the time.

    All this speculation is entertaining.
What defines "Blown up"? rod bearing? Crank bearing? Timing chain? Valve train part failure? Oil pump fail? The list goes on and on. Only toyota knows if systemic or random. Very few of reports provide detail. With this low of failure rate toyota will never disclose the root cause if systemic. Could be simple as a few engines were at the edge of the stacked tolerance window.

    Just drive it and enjoy.

10/125k warranty , plus I’m in a position to trade more often than driving it more than that as its a write off , I understand others are not the same , i think toyota will come through though

look at the rusty frame gen 1 fiasco, they covered those way out of warranty

it’s not as if the big 3 trucks aren’t warranty period trucks for ownership either , I trust Toyota more either way

lol what’s the point of owning a Toyota if you have a 10 year warranty on the vehicle. That’s the reason you buy Toyotas for their long history of reliability and durability. To me I would get the raptor with 10 year warranty much more exciting vehicle to drive personally.

not sure what’s lol about that

have at it, enjoy your 80k raptor

the point is these newer vehicles are very complex and even Toyota can have issues , nothing is perfect . Extended warranties are cheap and pro rated compared to repairs I’ve had on even older Toyotas

    shit happens man

If I was in a Raptor, I don’t think I could pull it off. I’d just look like a mid life crisis douchebag. At least in my Tundra I look….. hmm wait a minute

How confident are you in that? Did you forgo an extended warranty?

Would you buy a used one after the warranty expired? Prior to this generation, many would buy them used and not even consider a warranty on it. Now, not so much.

To be fair all trucks are this way now but Toyota wasn't for a long time.

I mean an extended warranty is cheap peace of mind for any vehicles. Even if electronics go out it would be replaced under that warranty. Maybe you will never use it and maybe you will, but for around 1000ish bucks, protecting a huge purchase is pocket change in the grand scheme of things.

I honestly wouldn’t buy any used vehicle at this point in time. People don’t care about stuff anymore and who’s to say they did the required maintenance or took care of it. Sure there are people out there that love their cars and take care of them, but that is few and far between now. Gone are the days of people appreciate the stuff they work very hard for. I know buying a new vehicle is like throwing money away, but it gives me peace of mind knowing that all required maintenance will be done and it hasn’t been driven like it was stolen. Plus I like to wash my vehicles by hand and I know most don’t and just run them through an auto wash, which destroys the paint.

that being said if the 2nd gen was still for sale at the time I bought my truck, I would have bought one. I didn’t really cross shop as I have been happy with my past Toyotas and don’t see any benefit on jumping ship.

    If I bought a 2024 4runner, right now, I wouldn't buy an extended warranty.

Who knows maybe in 2027 I won't have to get one on a Tundra as it will be a proven reliable truck with many going over 200,000 with just routine maintenance and no major repairs, right?

My wife drives a 2022 4runner and I bought an extended warranty for it. Not that I doubt the reliability I just don’t want a surprise repair bill if something is to break. To each its own but at the end of the day between Jerry and FD Warranty, these things are in my eyes dirt chip for the years they cover you, it just puts my mind at ease. I trust both our Toyotas and will continue to until there is a reason not to.

All I see on other pages is Ford vs. Toyota vs Ram vs Chevy. I have zero faith in any of these tech heavy automobiles. Too much crap that is destine to "go" at some point. My 24 has only 5k and I've had a couple of one-time problems. Randomly dumped by profile in the infotainment system, one-time e-brake issue. My buddy is a tech for Toyota and he said there are some problems with all new Toyotas that they flat-out can determine what;s wrong with them. Too smart for their own good.

I can't wait for that to be 200,000 miles. One of the reasons I picked up this 2018 Tundra was their history. I believe it was Iseecars research that showed the 2.5 Gen tundra had one of the highest chance (#2) to do it.

Once 3.0 does, it will put all these issues to bed.

    https://tfltruck.com/2023/05/these-are-the-top-15-trucks-most-likely-to-last-beyond-250000-miles/

What are your thoughts on the percentage that make it to 250,000 miles? Will it stay the same, go up or go down?

Me: How overly complex they are now will lower the percentage. All vehicles will see a down turn in long term reliability because of it.

Maybe another poster is right HD trucks may be the longest lasting ones do to being less complex?

    Couple of things...

You posted a link to TFL...sorry...that wouldn't be my first point of reference...

Secondly...HD trucks are becoming just as complex as the 3rd Gen...and they are having just as many, if not, more issues...ie. DEF, DPFs, etc...

The 3rd Tundra was engineered to go as long as the Land Cruiser...it was engineered to the highest possible tier that Toyota has in their durability testing...watch here as it comes straight from Mike Sweers: https://youtu.be/6cUXGon_ltI?si=t6PRul-HnbIO06Fk&t=525

Time will tell. Seems too many nagging issues, now, for that to happen.

I do want Toyota to remain the low repair cost, reliability king.

I did not get the extended warranty because I have never had to fix anything on any of the previous Toyota’s I have owned and they aren't as cheap here in Canada. Was really hoping it would be the same for this one. Sitting around 44,000 miles and keeping my fingers crossed that if it fails, it does so before my drivetrain warranty runs out.

I always get extended warranties, they more than pay for themselves every time , my last one was my 2016 platinum tundra and my 2015 Sienna, both paid for themselves.

I don't buy used vehicles so I can't really comment fairly on that.

to the point, any new vehicle now a days is a warranty own or extended warranty purchase IMO, it is what it is. That doesn't bother me enough to drive around older used vehicles, or whatever, but certainly understand people who do.

I don't miss my 2016 tundra compared to this one, everything about it is better except the exhaust note, but to be clear Im not knocking older tundra's at all, I liked all them , this is number 5.

you probably should for the hypothetical 4runner….my 2020 just had a water pump failure at 61k miles. Replaced the water pump and thermostat, was quoted $1100 by the dealer all in. My extended warranty covered it and i “only” paid my deductible ($250).

same boat so far all my toyota’s. They have all had extended warranties and have had repairs covered by them.

    1. 2016 4banger taco - Warranty cost $925 all-in ($50 deductible)
    • Steering rack covered under it at 60k miles (dealer quoted $950)
    • Body mount bushings underneath radiator at 70k ($450 dealer quote)
    • Trans mount at 75k ($250 dealer quote)
    2. 2020 4runner - Warranty Cost $1500 all in ($250 deductible)
    • Water pump at 60k miles ($1100 dealer quote)
    3. ‘23 Tundra - TBD lol warranty cost $2k all in. Unlimited years, 150k miles. ($250 deductible)

Maybe i just have the worst car luck of all time, but so far extended warranties have been necessary for me even with the most “reliable” of toyota’s.

How much was the warranty? Just guessing $2500. So with the deductible that's $2750. You still have another $1650 repair to break even. Wait make that $1,900 because $250 deductible added. 4runners are not known for breaking down often and are easy to fix. It doesn't take a Toyota dealer to work on them since they have been out for so long. I bet an independent would have done it for much less.
