Just bought a 2004 Tundra with a canopy and my goal is to get a roof rack system that goes on the canopy and cab and then a rooftop tent... Any suggestions??

You didn't need to start a 2nd thread to ask the same question. I'm not sure what you mean by roof rack system. While it's possible to mount a roof top tent on the topper, you'd likely need to reinforce it. Roof top tents have pros and cons. I think you'd be better off sleeping in the bed.

It's all about the fashion accessories. How will people know that he's interested in overlanding if he doesn't bolt a $2000 clam shell on his rig?

I do admit though, I kinda cringe a little bit when I see the term "overland" these days. I think it's been blown out, trendified. I'm sure that's not what OP intended though.

I've noticed an uptick on FB Marketplace recently with folks either selling off their built-up rigs openly, or parting out their "overlanding" equipment.

I try not to be a grumpy old man, but I'll admit "overlanding" is a pet peeve of mine. Best I can tell, the only difference between overlanding and "car camping" is how much money you spent on gear.

When I was a kid we called it car camping. To us it was lazy camping because it's when we didn't hike our crap miles into the woods just to sleep a few nights. That was our form of glamping.

It's cause of tiktak and youtubz. It's been glorified and people are wanting to hop on the trend and catch some clout on social media for their "overland rig"

then, just like any Motorsport or expensive ass hobby. They realize it's expensive AF lol and unless you're in it just cause you genuinely love it. You're gonna wind up dumping 10's of thousands of $$$ into trying to look cool on the inter webs.

lol ignore this stuff, it’s partially true, you can get out easily with a tent. Overlanding can be different, but the base of it is if it helps you get out more into nature I think it’s worth it. Especially if you have kids, who are too domesticated these days. I don’t even see the money spent on our crap as wasted, and yes it’s not cheap. But it gets us outside almost every other weekend, kids get to eat some dirt, learn to be more resilient and build great family memories.

the truth is, we all waste money on crap.

I am a fan of the rhino rack systems, but i do not know much about toppers.

I am a big fan of FSR tents, specifically the Odyssey. I had to sell mine because of family growth and what not, but I put a lot of miles on mine in a lot of states. They have their advantages, and for me, packing up in less than a minute was more than worth the price difference. that said, my ground tent and air mattress is more comfortable. I now pull a camper, but it is a different game regardless.

Some of the opinions offered are not too far off from the truth. But I enjoyed mine while it lasted and it is now being used by someone else.

my RTT plan was a platform to setup a regular tent on top of a ladder rack. But my dog convinced me to sleep in the bed instead.

Thanks for the insight. I'm 6'5 so sleeping in the bed isn't really an option. I'm new in this world so I'm learning as I go. By Roof Rack System I'm talking about the steel tubing that mounts on the box and goes above the canopy. When you say "mount a roof top tent on the topper" Do you mean directly attached to the topper or on a system like I'm Describing? Again, Newbie here.

I appreciate your effort! The only difference I notice is the places I can get to that my feet or a car can't get me to.

This place is wilder than I expected lol I just want to get further into nature! Had a car and did a lot of backpacking, but being able to drive out to new places further than my chevrolegs can get me to would be nice! I'm going to be very careful with using triggering words in my posts from this point forward

These guys are alright, much less toxic than most of the other forums. One thing you can expect here is to get a lot of playful ribbing. If your ego is weak, or you take everything as an attack vs. just poking at the new guy, you might not enjoy it much. One thing about folks here though, they do care. And from that has come super helpful posts we've collaborated together to put out there, like this one, to help folks like you, enjoying your new 1st Gen Tundra. To help you avoid classic mistakes, equip you with the knowledge you need to make that thing go a million miles w/o seeing untimely death.

To travel across the earth, by land, either to reach a far destination, or to stay off-grid, self-sufficient for long periods, without modern amenities. It's been used that way for more than my lifetime, and only recently got "marketized" into something I don't think it really is, which is "vehicular glamping" (glamping being a portmonteau for "glamour camping"). But I won't personally use that term, because most folks who use it are NOT using it in the classic sense. Maybe one in ten thousand, if we're lucky.

How I feel about what's happened, and how a lot of others feel which is why you got ribbed so much above, is summarized here: https://outworldhq.com/inconvenient-truth-modern-overlanding/

Note the 3rd paragraph, and the comment about thicker skin. Yep. You just witnessed it. No room for egos here. :D

That's it in a nutshell, though. Welcome to the forum.

Essentially. I've seen guys mount one directly to toppers but they added metal reinforcements inside to help support the weight. You'd have to search different ways to do this. Being so tall does limit your options. Have you considered a ground tent? That's honestly a pretty good option. Check out gazelle tents.

And sometimes install anti-spread measures inside the bed, between the bedrails, to prevent the bedsides from spreading in or out. Which, if 6'5", you may be 200-300+ lbs, so maybe something to think about.
