Wheel Stud Replacement bc of Incorrect Lug Nuts

    Howdy,

    I bought a used 2022 Tundra SR5 4x4 from a dealer out in Yuma (Bill Alexander Freightline Mazda, named them bc of the info below lol) back in January - came with some method wheels and was a pretty good price/low mileage so I pulled the trigger.

    Haven’t had any issues so far, upgraded to some 35” KO2s about 3000 miles ago and decided to rotate my tires today. When I took the lug nuts off the tires, I thought, “doesn’t seem like there’s many threads engaging,” but didn’t think much of it. As I was taking the rear passenger wheel off, it took a few too many ugga duggas to get two of the lug nuts off. Once it came off, I realized two of the guys wheel studs had been stripped and knew I had to replace em. Drove down to my local Toyota dealer to buy some new studs and he, almost immediately, asked if I was running methods on my truck. He then explained how the methods need to be ran with ET Acorn style lug nuts due to methods being hub centric, which made a ton of sense.

    Just wanted to post this to let people know that regular acorn lug nuts on methods can strip wheel studs and eventually shear off the wheel if you’re off-roading! Luckily for me, this was only a $40 fix (plus an afternoon of working on the truck), but I’m pretty disappointed that the dealer I bought this from didn’t see any issue using lug nuts that were engaging 3-4 threads.     I took my truck there for its 1st free oil change years ago. They did a tire rotation as well. Kept my wheel lock key. It was a pain to get it back. Later when I did my 2nd oil change, everything was put on way too tight.
    I’ve had great luck with Roger’s and Roger’s Toyota in El Centro, however that was in 2017.
    Any wheel/tire stuff the discount tire by the Yuma mall was always good.

    That looks like it was installed cross threaded.

    I’ve been running Rays 57DR-X wheels and Rays Dura Nuts L42 for 15k miles now. Do rotation myself every 5k. Never had issue with threads. I thread them on by hand and torque by hand to 100 ft lb. Never use gun due to aluminum lug nuts. Aluminum lugs softer than steel lugs.

    Probably was cross threaded when I got new tires. The lug nuts that were included with the truck originally were only engaging 3-4 rotations of thread - I just got these today and it seemed to engage about 9 full rotations of thread since the threaded portion goes into the lug bore of the wheel. But if you’re not having issues, that’s great! Those ray dura lugs look pretty sick!
