From what I've read, it seems to be 2022 thru most of 2023. I have a new short block and mechanic indicated that the crank and bearings are different. He also indicated there was some type of flaw. I put alot of miles per yr. @ about 22k a yr and also tow a boat, so mine may have gone earlier then most, but not from what I'm reading about others with the same problem...

The qualifying question is "Through most of 2023" is that model year or calendar year of manufacture? Because if its most of 2023 manufacture date, then model year 2024s would also have this issue.

there is not a documented VIN verified case here since Feb 2023, so unless I see otherwise, it isnt "most" of 2023 but rather not much of 2023 at all.

supposedly they corrected the issues in March of 2023 so early 2023 model are the ones affected it seems and a very small percentage of trucks at that.

So trucks with a build date of March 2023 *should* be ok? Do you think they caught it before engines were blowing?

New MY22 SR5 with 23K mi with spun bearings and coolant leak from Cyl head freeze plug just reported on Reddit. Trying to get him to come here and log it. Hasn’t shared build month/Yr yet.

The one 23MY failure I saw on the results spreadsheet indicated failure at 179 miles. Wouldn’t that possibly suggest a different issue than the others that experienced failure after 20k+ miles? That’s quite literally “brand new” off the lot.

Is the issue still estimated at less than 1% of total produced or has it gone up?

My little knowledge of how internal combustion engines work say that the bearings problem accumulates over time due to insufficient oiling (low oil flow, low viscosity, elevated bearings load, elevated heat, higher detonations count). 0.5% is percentage of completely failed engines. It is not unlikely lot more of them drive with the bearings damaged, but not failed completely yet.

Same little knowledge says you can at least defer this problem by using a higher viscosity oil. 5w30 if not 10w30 or higher.

Would it be accurate to summarize that the consensus is to avoid MY22 or early MY23 used Tundras?

I find myself shopping for Tundras from time to time. The drivetrain in the 2-2.5 gen has my heart, but everything else about them is so dated. I’m seeing some reasonable pricing on low mileage 2022-2023 3rd gen Tundras. Likely a reason if they are potential time bombs that I should avoid.

    good luck in your search

I found the v8 to sound better 100% hands down , but this new one does everything else better, rides 100% better in all of my uses for sure as an example. It tows awesome

My 3rd gen taco meets my needs aside from interior space. Wife, 2 kids and a medium sized dog makes for some interesting trips when we don’t take the 4Runner.

I’m only at the point of dipping my toes in the tundra purchase waters. Lots to be considered. As much as I’d prefer to buy 2024+ if I decide to pursue a 3rd gen, I’d consider a 22/23 if a robust warranty was included. 2.5gen is still an option for me as I do love me some Quicksand.

Are damaged bearings something Toyota can “check for” or do we just have to wait to see if our engines fail??

IF this is the likely scenario a replacement should fix that issue and we should not see any repeat customers as it were.

It can be checked, but no one will do that.

You do not have to wait to change oil to a thicker viscosity. Oil film thickness is what keeps surfaces apart. Going to 5w30 will make oil film thicker, MPG will stay largely unaffected.

Here's where I'm at. Love my 23 TrdPro. Is it perfect, nope. But it checks off many of the things I wanted and does them all for me very well.
It's a late Oct 22 build date. I take care of it. Almost 14K and already three oil changes. I change oil once in the spring and fall and this sequence works for me.
If it breaks, for sure will be disappointed. I have an extended Warranty and it will be repaired.
Life is short and wife and I intend to enjoy our golden years :). PS just found out going to be a First Time Grand-Daddy.

Would 5w20 or 30 be better here in hot Phoenix (also towing through the desert).

I would use 10w30 or 0w40 in 100+ ambient temps.

In fact I was using 15w40 in my 19 y.o. turbo Volvo spec'd for 0w30 when I was out on a long overlanding trip. When it burnt a valve at ~250k miles I took the engine apart and found no main bearings wear. MPG difference was negligent, driving 9-10 hours a day for a week everything under the hood heats up like hell, thanks to turbo, so 15w40 becomes very fluid. I'm not taking it to long trips anymore, but use 0w40 year round. Don't care if MPG is 1% worse.
No. Amsoil Signature Series 10w30 is excellent, for example.

Is there a real concern with Toyota denying a warranty claim if this oil is used? I don’t care about 1-2% better fuel economy. I want to worry a little less about engine failure while towing though a 105 degree desert.

No. Unless you use 20w50 in arctic climate and try to lemon the truck because it does not even turn in -60F weather.
