Flex fuel is capable of running E85 or regular gas. Has issues with confusing one for the other. Then your truck doesn’t want to start. Has an open TSB to replace the fuel pump and reflash the computer to fix this, which it sometimes does. More trouble than it’s worth.

I been a member since last fall and haven't seen any recent threads in the 2.5 Gen section bringing up issues about this. I looked at my car fax, mine is listed this way too and zero issues on this 6 year old vehicle so far.

Lucky you sir. I’ve seen at least 10 threads in the last 3 months about it.

I just went to the Toyota Owner's site and there is no recall for mine. Is this a hidden TSB?

Never had a problem either on two different 2.5 gens, but I knew about it and never ran the corn juice. To me, you pay less to get less mpg and the possible engine codes = hard pass for me.

Won’t matter if you run it or not. If your truck is a 2nd gen FFV, the computer can incorrectly calculate and store elevated ALC% causing issue with fuel delivery.

This is so true. We’re in FL and just picked up a 14 4R Limited with 47k on the odometer. It was clearly garage kept and looks brand new.

And… the 2018 all the way.

For what it's worth regarding flex fuel vehicles... my Tundra is an ffv because that's what was available but hasn't seen a drop of it in the 120k miles I've driven it. From what I understand it's less efficient and oil changes have to drop to 2500 miles so it never made financial sense to switch. I wonder how many tundra ffv owners have a similar experience.

Either way, I'd be weary of buying a 100k+ vehicle of any make or model for that kind of money due to the uncertainty of the previous owner's driving habits and maintenance schedule.

Procedure from the owner's manual below. I live Florida so the cold is rare here and I always use the same type of gas with ethanol so now I know not to change or if I do, follow these. Also thanks to KNABOREs, I can have it fixed in the next 3 years before the 80,000 mile mark. If it doesn't happen, must mean it's fixed?

In reality 3 years from now if it occurs, I'll have the pump done and re-flash (pay for it outside of warranty) and carry on for another decade.

Yup, same and never had a problem with ffv, but always read better to get gas only version if possible.

My 2018 Tundra Crew Cab 4X4 is Flex Fuel and I have never had a problem, yet. I would never run high corn gas in it. In Georgia it is 10 percent I believe. I use 87 Octane. My gas mileage was pretty good until I changed tires. With the tires that came on it I was getting 17 to 18.5 on the highway cruising 70 to 80 MPH. In town I was getting 13 to 14.5. The oil changes change on a FFV from 10K to 5K. Well I hope I don't have any trouble. I will put that on my list of things to worry about. LOL.

That 2022 with crazy miles is maybe only ten grand from a brand new one? Pass.....

As for the 2018, too much money. Six years old and almost the same number as when it was new?
    Aftermarket rims on it.

From Toyota, 3ur-fbe engine requires 2500 mile oil change interval if using e85.

at the end of the day, the 2/2.5 gen has so much more time on the road and in development it is a safer purchase then a high mileage first year model that is having some issues in its first year. more than average issues imo, with main bearing failures and engine rebuilds.....although the 3rd gen fans will argue it's only 1% and cant provide supporting sources. would suck to be part of that 1%.

i had both and in the end only needed one. i choose proven reliability over unknown...loved the tech and features in the 3rd gen tho. kept my supercharged 08 with 105k miles and sold the 22 to carmax for a solid deal at 17k miles.

You forgot to add gently used pavement princess that only went on the dirt parking at the kids soccer field, daily to starbucks and is the envy of all the lifted big wheel trucks in the gated community.

    Huh?

To keep the 5k oil change at the Toyota dealer the previous owner was doing on the carfax, I had it done despite the oil barely darker than new on the dipstick with no gas smell in it.

I’ll take a closer look but don’t recall seeing 2,500 mile oil changes in the owners manual.

Book in glove compartment says if running e85 2500 mile oil changes, have almost 100k on my ffv and have not had a issue and if I did I would just get the reader or laptop with program and recalibrate the alcohol value and carry on with my life.

Since your profile shows a 2018, I assume this is a theoretical discussion/thought exercise?

I suspect you'd get a more interesting discussion if you pitted a high mileage 2.5 gen against a low mileage 3rd Gen.

Yes as I do buy used vehicles as much as I have bought new. I do think twin turbo motors can last but would I buy one with high mileage to put it to the test?

I actually considered a new one before buying this 2018 but I was looking for low tech and proven to last on purpose. Hopefully we will have a bunch of 300,000 mile Gen 3 Tundras to prove they are still the reliability king.

On a side note I did read the stickers on a gas pump today. Apparently in Florida they "can" put up to 10% corn alcohol in the gas. I guess that makes it E90 gas?? If reflashing and changing out a gas pump is the only issue I have with this truck, I'll take it.

We only have e10 in the NY (believe all year) and the amount of Ethanol can be greater that 10%.

The stuff is horrible for boats. The Ethanol draws in water from the environment (hyproscopic)
This raises the potential for phase separation during storage if the tank is vented to the atmosphere.

Wish we had an option for the regular stuff.

I agree with Eurodriver. Buy an out of warranty Gen3 and fund Toyota to develop a better truck. Toyota needs all the money it can possibly get, new sales or parts, does not matter.
