I couldn't get over it so I looked at the manual again and then realized. I was reading the front differential for the 4.6 which I don't have. I feel stupid now lol. That answers everything it's 4qt for the rear dif, I'm done.

Lol good to know, for future reference, pretty much every differential, or transfer case on anything, is fill til it comes out and put the plug back in, no way would someone be expected to forced more fluid in while its trying to seep out and then shove the filler cap back on, my guess is that would increase the chances of clogging a breather tube.

That also crossed my mind but I was caught up with "5 quarts" I thought I was doing it a good regardless of when the fluid was already coming out. The whole time I'm talking to the dif like "you need 1 more quart" lol smh

Manual states a standard for normal use as a basic truck with nothing in it or towing in the environment it was tested during R/D……….for mpg and EPA of course. We “should” all know a truck is to be used as a truck. More you tow, might want to consider different fluid as long as it meets the specs. Colder or warmer states? Check it out. Even the manual calls for different engine oil if you dig through it for certain temps. 75/90 won’t bother it one bit for pavement queens or towing here and there with a camper. Some folks here switch to 75/140 who tow daily. Why? Because they understand gears and fluid. If it meets the specs, it meets the specs. The numbers are for those who use it in different environments and situations. It’s your job to do the research for your environment and situation.

I switched my rear today at 81k. Yes I used new plug gaskets. They’re cheap enough. If I spend $50, just guessing, on oil, then I can spend a few more dollars on new crush washers. It’s cheap and easy. Drain, clean, new plug gaskets, refill to torque spec. Which is about 36 lb/ft on rear.

Do your research and stop saying “manual states 4.9 quart. Only 4 came out so I force another quart” lol BS. People up here are telling you the answers you seek. Listen to them. And I don’t mean me. Good luck.
