I bought a used 22 Tundra Capstone last weekend and have really enjoyed it but there’s a very annoying rattle coming from my headliner above the passenger seat. I believe it’s triggered by cold weather. If it’s warm I don’t hear it.

    Has anyone experienced something similar?

    Thanks for the help.

I have a video but need to covert it to mp4 when I get home so I can upload.

Here is a screenshot from the video of me stopping the noise by putting pressure on the headliner.

I assume since the noise stops its origin is pretty close to that area.

sorry the image quality is poor.

I find the clips that hold the headliner to the roof to be quite weak. My kid wanted to stick her head out the sunroof one day and grabbed onto the headliner piece to help pull herself up. One clip came undone and the headliner piece became a little floppy on the passenger side. I just pushed it back in easily. But now even the smallest amount of tension will pop it back out again. Its like the clip became weakened by being pulled out initially.

Maybe previous owner has a similar incident and the clip just isn't holding it tight anymore.

Thanks guys! This is very helpful.

Ive got a 2:45 appointment with my Toyota dealership today.

I’ll share all of this with them and report back on what they say/do.

Check out my previous post from last weekend. It completely solved the issue. There is a clip on both left and right side at the top of windshield (approx 9 inches from either edge.

Thanks, Taco2Tundy. I appreciate your post. I think I’ve got the exact same issue.

I’m sitting in the lobby of my Toyota dealership right now.

I sent them a link to your thread and a video i took this morning of the ticking sound.

It seems to be way louder when the weather is cold. This morning it was 32 degrees and it was very loud. This afternoon its warmed up to 37 and I couldn’t hear it as bad.

I’m worried they are going to tell me they can’t recreate it. Which would be unfortunate because I’m not sure we are going to get anymore sub freezing days this winter (in my area) and I’ve got 31500 on the truck so my bumper to bumper will be gone by next winter.

In that case I’ll just have to fix it myself with the help of your thread… not my area of expertise but i would give it a shot to stop that horrible ticking sound!

Good luck with it….keep in mind, you can carefully lower the headliner if you are not comfortable removing it entirely. You just have to be careful not to bend the liner too much which will end up looking like a bent piece of cardboard.

Once it is lowered, you can access the tab by following the windshield up and you will see the plastic tab (it is quite small and can easily be cut with a pair of side cutters. Then it’s is just a matter of prying the rest of it out.

Once it’s removed, it is piece and quiet again!

There was an old urban legend about some assembly line worker placing a beer bottle inside a box frame before it was welded closed.

Today you might find a crack pipe above a headliner.

This is what they ended up doing. Told me to come back if it doesn’t work.

I didn’t get a chance to drive much post appointment but I’m not holding my breath.

I’m going to try and get out this morning and test it. It’s cold out.

    Dealerships "fix" did not work.

As I see it, i've got a few options:

    1. Fix it myself with the help of Taco2Tundy's thread. (& pray I don't bend the headliner or break something else)

    2. Take it back to the dealership and try to get them to remove the plastic tab while still under warranty.

    3. Live with the random ticking and hope Toyota comes out with a TSB for it at some point.

Right now, I'm leaning towards #1. Just have to find the 3 hours to make it happen.

That sucks! If you are not dropping the entire liner, you are looking at an hour at the most to get’er done. Remove 2 bolts on the a pillar, remove 2 screws holding sunvisor, twist off sunvisor holding clip, pull down the top center console.

    good luck!

I know it is a pain to do so but take it back to the dealership. They reproduced the issue and have it documented. It’s still under warranty. I would take it back until they get it right. If you try to do it and break something, they won’t cover anything and it will cost a lot more time, effort and money.

I just noticed the dealership bent the trim piece in front of the passenger seat while trying to fix my ticking noise last week. The wood piece that illuminates and says “capstone”.

Called the parts team, that’s a $1200 piece of ”garnish”.

    Can’t make this stuff up.

They ended up calling it a “manufacturer defect”. Which is fine with me. New part is on the way.

Honestly I would stress to them to "really focus" on removing the head liner and finally make it right with the head liner and then replace the trim they damaged.
Because I know if those ass monkeys replace that trim first and then do the head liner you will be starting the whole F ing cycle AGAIN.
At that point, you may as well find there time clock punch in,grab a coffee mug and grab the main lobby TV remote control do to the amount of time you have there.

I'm curious if I have a similar issue. I bought my first Toyota Tundra a couple months ago and absolutely love it other than the slight creaking sound in the headliner. It's right above my head and I cant ignore it. If I press near the sound with my fingers, it stops. I let go and it's back. I guess I'm going to all the dealership and see what they say.

Update on my 2024 Tundra: Since it's under warranty, I went ahead and let the service department take a look. The technician confirmed the sound within the headliner. They felt like the sure fix will be to replace the headliner. They have it ordered and I'll let you guys know how things go after they get it installed.

Yes! thank you for the reminder to update this. The replacement headliner fixed my issue. I did have to drop it off for the day, but it's completely quiet now. I was very pleased with our local service center.

Was it a crunching noise almost like the crumpling of paper? Mine has that over bumps but I left the pano roof shade open and it for the most part quieted the noise. I’m guessing it’s something with the adhesive

Yes, I could see it being compared to crumpling of paper. I would think that there's a possibility of it occurring anywhere in the ceiling where its not secure. I'm not sure if the ceiling is secured with adhesive or some type of snaps, but mine was happening right above the drivers seat. I could even press that exact spot with my fingers and as long as I held it, it would completely stop it. I let go... it would come right back. I would have thought they could've just pulled the liner down enough to secure that one spot but they felt like it would be better to replace the whole deal. I cant knock them, because it's worked so far.
