Upgrade to LED headlights causes inoperable fog lights

My apologies if this issue has been discussed before. I have a 2003 Tundra Access Cab with the 4.7L V8. Recently I upgraded the low beam bulbs from halogen to LED. The swap went great, until I tried to use my fog lights and noticed that turning on the fog light switch did NOT illuminate the fog lights but instead caused my high beams to come on. I had read previous posts about installing a resistor from superbrightleds.com in line with the driver's side headlamp, which I did, and noticed that my fog lamps now worked as expected. Great right? WRONG! After driving to work early one morning (about a 20 minute commute), I noticed that my driver's side headlamp was flickering once I entered the parking garage. A few seconds later it went out completely. Once I was parked, I raised the hood and found that the resistor I had installed was BLAZING hot...almost too hot to touch. I removed the resistor, plugged my headlamp back in and both headlights worked again, although now the fog lamp issue is here again. Has anyone come up with a better fix than this resistor trick?

 

Welcome. Known issue. Throw a resistor on your passenger side headlight to fix it. Read the following post.

Most people I've seen on here put the resistor at the end of the circuit, passenger side.

If you bought cheap Chinesium bulbs, it's quite possible they're just utter shit quality, and it's not the resistor that's your issue. Likewise, if you bought cheap Chinesium resistor, same story. You get what you pay for. More lighting info in that thread ^^

Can you tell me the reasoning for why the resistor should be on the passenger side rather than the driver's side?

 

Not sure honestly. Just seems to work better when on the passenger side. Maybe those things get car sick riding on the driver side of the vehicle. LOL

 

I’m running resistors on both sides.

 

It’s also normal for resistors to get hot. Likewise with the plug-in drivers for the LEDs.

Which LEDs did you buy?

 

You can run this resistors on either side. I installed ONE on the Driver side and mounted it on the fender support.

 

I have them on both sides ATM. My Bi-led projectors were acting screwy with just one on the passenger side.

They're not wrong @RushFan65. It looks like those Auxito bulbs do have cutoff shields, but I'd pull close to a white wall and look for upward scatter. Plenty of reports of using LED bulbs in OEM housings blinding oncoming traffic.

 

Thanks shifty! After I installed the LEDs, I did notice a bit of upward scatter, so I adjusted my headlights down just a hair. I had my daughter sit in her car about 100 yards down the street and drove towards her, adjusting the lights down a smidge after each pass until she said they looked no brighter than any of the other LED/HID equipped cars on the road.

Been driving with these in my truck for over three weeks now, and haven't had a single person flash their high beams at me.

The illumination pattern is nothing short of amazing, as I can see the side of the road so much better than the stock lamps, even with the "super bright" halogens I had previously installed. I can now see street signs illuminated far sooner than I could before. I feel like I'm driving my wife's 2020 Acura now!

 

Post some output shots from the driver seat for us.

 

LEDs are a pretty noteworthy upgrade over halogen. Although I feel like halogen does cast farther. LED seems to be a more-focused beam though.

 

artsr2002, here's a photo of the beam pattern on my 2003 with the Auxito LEDs. Had to take the photo out of the driver's side window since the windshield was fogged up

Meh. Recommend the mini projectors instead as long as your lenses are nice and clear.
