My AC '02 Tundra didn't come with carpet. I'm considering all options and wonder if anyone has shed the liner and just gone "commando" down "there". Maybe rhino liner or rubber mat?

If I do buy a replacement carpet kit, does anyone know what color might have been in there originally? Rock auto lists several.

I'ma probably need hardware, too. The trim pieces are in the back, but I bet there are screws and plastic bits...

Sometimes a great deal isn't a great deal.

Can’t offer help on the carpet, and this may be a little late given the condition but, I was able to repair the cloth seats in my old T100 with iron on patches. It wasn’t pretty, but it worked well and saved the foam from crumbling out.

Thanks! A patch is a good idea. I think all trucks/SUV's should have reinforced fabric on the seat edge.

Also, the more I look at options, I think I want rubber or vinyl for the floor. This ain't no show pony! We do desert and snow and southern Utah and the dump a LOT. If I'm going to put down rubber liners anyways, why not start with something that will shed the mud and spills?

Last time I replaced a carpet I got a junkyard carpet. It wasn’t the most fun I’ve ever had and I had to clean and dye it outside the car but it worked out great and cheap.

an upholstery shop will repair that seat for you a couple hundred bucks.

I’d just hit the junkyard myself.

how’s the frame look on that beast? Have you checked this out yet?

I saw the thread yesterday, great advice! When I bought the truck I crawled under and glanced at the frame because it looked great from where I could see it. The truck is at a friend's house so I can't do a good inspection right now. There are some rust holes in the bed, which made me suspicious, but I didn't act on it. Either the PO had the frame replaced and kept the old bed, or there may be some rust gremlins hiding in there. I'll do a good inspection when I get it back.

The rust in the bed may also be from a bed liner. Their location is consistent with some other pics I've seen in this forum.

I haven’t done it in a truck but 2 of my older drift cars were completely gutted and I daily drove them. It was terrible. It’s much louder in the cabin. You can feel the heat from the floor boards if you’re wearing shorts. And there isn’t any grip for your feet so you’d be surprised at how slick it is, especially if you walk through water.

just my $.02 I wouldn’t do it again unless the car/truck was for off-road/track use only

Thinking...yeah, we pulled the carpet from my '92 Land Cruiser after a gallon of coolant drained all over the inside. I scraped the padding/insulation from the back of the carpet, pressure washed it with Dawn, put down an insulating pad and sound deadener, then put the carpet back in. I think it's louder inside than it was before. I can see how something like carpet and pad would make a big difference.

    Good data point. Thanks!

I haven't gone "commando" in my tundra, but I did a similar thing in my old Dodge Ram. Headliner was crap in it and the previous owner removed some of the backing for it so parts of it was bare metal. I got tired of dealing with the headliner so I pulled it all out, cleaned it, primed it, then put several thick coats of the rubberized undercoating spray (to deaden sound), then painted it gray to match the interior of the truck. I was much happier with it, but would of still have preferred an actual headliner.

I do suspect you might have some rust gremlins hiding. I bought my Tundra in July, everything on the frame that I saw at the time was great, just very minor rust in a couple of spots. I did a more full inspection when I got time and found that the motor mount area on the passenger side of the frame is pretty rusty, the passenger side lower control arm mounting area was rusty, and the steering knuckles were super rusty. Point being, get a closer look at it, come up with an attack plan, and go for it when you have time. Currently taking care of these spots on my truck and have been fighting some rusted on bolts and whatnot. Fun...

I'm dropping at my mechanic/tire shop on Wednesday. It's a Land Cruiser/4wd specialty shop. They're going to go all through it and see what they can potentially charge me for, so I'll have them inspect for rust. Then I'll do it again when I get it back from them. I might just plan to remove the bed for better inspection.

Again, not a restoration project, just a truck I need to get 3-5 years out of...but I have a hard time NOT digging in and taking care of things. I have to remind myself.

...also, my headliner is sagging in places. The fabric is separating from the foam. I figure I'll try fixing it right before I redneck it.
