I currently have a Ranch hand Legend Grille Guard on my 2008 Tundra Double cab and I’m thinking about cutting and welding it onto an off-road style bumper for better clearance while still having the front end protection. Now the bumper in mind will be a steel bumper bolted to the frame. Heres picks for reference. Tell me if I’m Stupid or a genius. I want your opinions.

Can the Ranch Hand lower not be cut / shaped / fabbed to a similar setup? Like cut the wings down to better meet the clearance and aesthetics your looking for? Maybe weld some new plates on to clean it up?

You can do that but the issue that I’m seeing is that the Ranch Hand goes directly under the stock bumper and bolts to the frame. To achieve what I want, I would either have to get rid of the stock bumper and replace or fab something that fits the needs or chop the stock bumper and lose my fog lights.
    Image for reference.

I thought you had the full Ranch Hand Legend bumper already. Couldn't tell due to the next level photoshop in that first pic

I think you are right on track to get what you say you want; both clearance and protection IMG_0892.jpgThe key to clearance is the approach angle, which you don’t have, with the stock ranchhand.
Genius? That’s gonna depend on the quality of the finished work.

The design of your bumper, and many others will not cut it if you hit a large animal. The wings that are supposed to protect the headlights and outter edges of the body are free floating. A solid hit and the wing will bend right back to and into the body destroying the headlights and more important cause serious front body damage. Ah, they look nice but in a hit they won’t make it and lot of money will be spent on body repair. I have seen serious
damage done by bumpers with floating wings when locals have hit White Tails.

I have always used Backstop front bumpers on all of my Rams. They are resigned to prevent as mush damage in as hit as possible. Backstop Bumpers can be ordered with a winch pocket, where the winch sits inside the bumper with a removable top access cover to get to the winch if repairs need to be done.

Check them out at https://www.buckstopinc.com/ They are not cheap, but they work and will last. You can surf on the website to choose Toyota Tundra and then look at options.

Thank you very much Paul, I’ll definitely check them out. Hitting a large animal is a huge concern for me up here in Alaska. I do a lot of highway driving both at night and during the day and moose, bears, and caribou are constantly running across the highways. Thank you for the provided information of design flaws.

You being in Alaska, do have to deal with many the large animals. Where I am in the Adirondack MTS of NY, Here its Black Bear and White Tail Deer and maybe a Moose. Yet even the ones in my area can and do inflect serious damage on the Vehicle that hits them. Where i Capt Kirt, we need deflector shields 100% power ha ha

Check out SOB Fabrication. I was texting him about his bumper. Got really nice approach angles. Strong! Might work for you. Not sure if he has a game sweeper on the front but could be added.
