But before soaking, do you have any bronze wool? Not steel wool, but bronze wool. Just curious if a light rub with 0000 bronze wool takes it off.

"Cleaning" Vinegar (30% strength) from Home Depot, et al. The stuff you buy in the supermarket is only 5%...still works, but takes longer.

If you can remove as much rust as possible mechanically, then it won't have to sit in the acid bath as long, and there will be less discoloration/erosion of the chrome.

this stuff works well to remove light rust & you'll find it at the grocery store in the laundry/chemicals section.

 

I'm scouting out the Ravioli front end rebuild. This LCA bolt is going to suck. I'll have to see if anyone covers it on YouTube. I can fit a socket on there but a ratchet won't fit between the transmission pan. I hope I don't have to drop the pan. I even tried a wobble socket.








The inlaws got me the Rigid Subcompact Impact I wanted. I think I'm going to love this thing. So much easier to work with.

 

Looks like you're in need of a 22 mm wobble socket. SK Tools makes a good set but they're pricey. Best to see if Neiko makes them since if I recall that's what you currently have.

You could also see if you can get a breaker bar in there instead of using the impact.

Looks like Sunex makes them and Amazon carries them. Best to check the Sunex website to get dimensions.

can you cut down the socket to be short enough to fit?
Maybe a ratcheting wrench?

 

Throw a universal joint or two on it?

 

I’ve found that rust doesn’t go that deep on wrenches. I’ve had really good luck with spending about 30 seconds scrubbing with a brass bristled brush (or wire wheel of it’s real thick rust), then give them a quick buffing on a bench top buffing wheel (with whatever buffing or rubbing compound you have laying around). It should remove pretty much all the rust.

 

That reminds me. I need to offload some extra stuff. Some of it I can ship around. Others are too big.

I need to find a new home for this 26” Craftsman box, from an era before they sold at Lowe’s. And soon, like, before 2nd week of January. I just don’t know anyone in our area that doesn’t have tools. I don’t think we have any younger/more junior members on here who are just getting started and don’t have a good amount of tools and boxes already. I’m sure @Cummins3500 and @abcinv both have everything squared away there.

 

I also have a bunch of soldering stuff that needs a new home. Lots of components (resistors, diodes, etc.) that need new homes.

Haha. Family life, house, new (to me) travel trailer keepin me too busy. I check in but mostly don’t post. It’s almost more stressful though as there are so many threads with new posts!

 

Hard to find good older toolboxes, that's for sure. I'm good in that area though with the room that I have left, ha. I'm working on getting a shed put out in my back yard to store all my lawn equipment/tools. That stuff takes up a lot of space.

 

It does! If I have some place I could stick my mower, pressure washer, and the family bikes it would basically allow me to reclaim my garage. And my wife would stop complaining about "having too much shit", which'd be a relief. But I literally don't have enough yard to install a shed. Curse of living in the city, on a 1/6 acre lot, where the back yard is a shared driveway with a ditch in it. If I had room for a shed and a place to park a boat, I think I could stay where we were another 15-20 years, but I look forward to the kids going off to school so we can move somewhere with more land.

 

I want a 20’ shipping container; I could have gotten one on the cheap from work, there were literally 5 20’ and 4 40’ and this asshole at work bought all of them and then wanted top dollar for them when he paid Pennys

We never let anything go from work in bulk unless nobody else expressed interest. You can do sooo much cool stuff with those containers!! Just gotta be careful to test them, verify what was hauled in them before occupying.

I have a pole barn for outdoor stuff and room in the unfinished basement...

 

I could use soldering tools. I'm still learning and only have a small portable Weller. But probably shipping costs (financial and environmental) make it better to find a closer novice.

 

Appreciate the offer! It's looking like we're closing down our work site, so this box and a gaggle of other stuff is going with it.

Also a strong possibility I'm getting laid off 2nd week of January, or being informed of my exit date that week, which could be anywhere between Jan 8th and March 31. I'm hoping that's what happens, at least. The reality is ... after 25 years, it's bittersweet, but I think I've given just about all I've got to give to help us stay afloat, the business is too top-heavy with lackluster mgmt, and has been rolling downhill like a snowball headed for hell.

I too have a small Weller; it helps a lot of things but soldering isn't one of them...

If I had more space I'd gladly give it a good home.

Thankfully down here I was able to snag an acre and a half BUT is mostly forest/trees/shrubs/underbrush. I plan on pushing it back with forestry mulching when the funds permit. I have to clear it first, then lay a foundation for the shed then get the shed.

 

I can't imagine it would cost more than $20, and I'm willing to cover the ride if it's going to a good home.

Some of it likely won't be useful for you, like ... SMD soldering tweezers, I can see an EE or someone working with PCBs on a daily basis using those, but anyone like that would probably have some already
