Except those temps are for AB60. A760E/F, and fluid level check temperature range is 127-138. That detail alone could cost someone a missed 3oz of fluid. ;)

Correct, i just know off have the temp i need to remember but obviously someone with the 4.6 should know theirs, i feel like the majority here are 5.7 though, 4.6 seemed more popular in the 2nd gen than the 2.5.gen.

I've been having trouble getting my 2012 Toyota Tundra 4.6L with 6 speed transmission (no trans cooler/tow package) into trans fluid check mode. These are the steps I do:
    • Warm the truck up, engine temperature close to normal operating range
    • Jump the specified terminals on the ODII connector (lights are now flashing on the dash)
    • Shift P-R-N-D
    • Shift D-N with 1.5 seconds between many times
No A/T Temp light or Drive gear selection light will ever come on.

Could this be because I have a check engine light for catalyst below efficiency?

Is there anything else I should be doing to get into fluid check mode?

Just buy a cable and the bootlegged Techstream. Best tool to have when doing this type of stuff. You can also get a Scan Gauge II or III. Makes life a whole lot easier.

Engine needs to be cold/cool when starting. The temp to check is in the low 100’s so if the engine is warm you’re already way passed that.

    Agreed. 99-111 degrees for my 2021 SR5.

My scan gauge reads the torque converter temp not the pan temp. It’s always higher in degrees than my pan temp according to my thermal gun which makes sense since the T/C is where the most heat is generated.

I point the laser of the thermal gun directly into the Allen wrench hole of the plug to read the pan temp. Pointing it onto a painted metal surface like the pan can give an erroneous reading according to the thermal gun instructions.
I’m confident it’s accurate this way because during my last drain and fill the plug temp reading was the same as the fluid being drained during the final drain. I also checked the temp of the painted surface of the pan before pulling the plug and if memory serves it was 10-15* cooler.

Anyway, the bottom line is I don’t know how else to do it and I find it difficult to trust someone else to do it.
My SR5 does not have a way to read TFT temps from the cab other than my scan gauge which reads the T/C temp, not the pan temp.

Or got to lower AZ during summer, and you already are at the correct temperature when you start anytime after noon lol. Just make sure your fluid has been sitting in the garage overnight.

I mean, most people here who say, "USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION" don't care to help others in need anyway. The way people reply here sometimes, it's as if they own the forum. If you don't like what you see, it takes less energy to just keep scrolling.

Anywho, I love these threads. lol

The torque converter temp is actually the same as the pan temp until you start driving, the torque converter only gets hotter than the pan when its being used while unlocked, when the torque converter is locked up the temp will basically mirror the pan temp as well. I watch my temps almost every drive with my OBDlink MX+.
I happen to be the person who keeps reciting the same information over and over or else I would not have said to search, I have more likes than I do messages, Im always willing to help people but it gets frustrating when you see the same posts over and over. If someone has a question they could at least find a thread on the same topic instead of starting a new one.

It'll read both pan and converter temps. I usually have both displayed.
These are the codes I pulled off the Tacoma forum some years ago for a 2nd gen Tacoma. Same codes worked for Tundra (2.5 gen) & 4Runner (5th gen) that I've used same scan gauge in.

    I appreciate that.
Currently mine reads “TFT190” or whatever the temp is at the time.

I realize my thermal gun could be off a few degrees but when I fire it on the torque converter housing that temp is always the closest if not exactly what the scan gauge reads. The pan temp doing the same thing is always cooler. I think I said there was a 10-15 degree difference between the t/c and the pan temps in my previous post. It’s more like 5-10 degrees. My bad.

I’m not embarrassed to say say that I’m not very savvy without really easy to understand instructions which ofcourse is relative to begin with, so I had the factory set it for my truck before they sent it.

Good to know. Makes sense since the t/c will be the hotter of the two while driving better to know it’s temp.

My OBD2 terminal doesn't have a wire connected to the #4 pin as directed in procedure. Has anyone seen this before or know if there is a different "check level" pin out?
Mine only has 1,2,3 to top and 12, 13, 14, 15 on bottom.

    2020 Tundra SR5 4x4 purchased new.

    Thanks

    Hi John, @Rocko9999
You are the first to post about the 2nd Gen 4.6L A760 trans having a different check temperature. This is late in the game for an ask, but I plan to dump the fluid in the 4.6 2010 tomorrow. Can you reveal the source of this information?

A post upstream shows TSB TC009-07 lists all 07 Tundras (2Gen) as 115 - 133F with no mention of engine or trans type. Its not much of a difference and I guess its related to the pan volume at those temperatures OR the overall operating temperature of the two different transmissions. Higher op temp equal higher fluid levels and vice versa.
As best I know, my 2010 4x4 with 108K miles has never had fluid dumped and has no obvious seeps or leaks. It does have the tow package cooler. I also have a 2013 Lexus IS-350 RWD with the same A760 RWD trans, which I dumped the pan/filter from at 100K (late IMO) and filled with Amsoil. Its temp check range tops at 115F IIFR, which aligns close with the numbers posted above. Anyway, 20K and not issues with the 350 and it gets hammered on.

Any input on the 4.6L/A760 fluid temp check is welcome. This is by means of OBD scanner, not paperclip method.

    Thanks!

Why you guys bother with exact temperature? I was draining and filling back the amount I drained for 4 years until transmission cooler was installed and I didn't know its capacity. No adverse effects, no nothing, it just worked.

for the record, I never bothered with exact temp.

I only did the trickle thing because I was down there anyway & it insures the correct level.

    and yes, no adverse effects.

That is what I have done on 2 Tacomas and now Tundra. I tried a one Tacoma to do the temp check thing and could not get it in temp mode. Works fine for me.

As long as the truck isnt hot, it shouldnt affect anything. If anything I think the transmission is better off woth a little more fluid than less when you drain the check valve cold.
