I like using tech, so I have a note in my iPhone with maintenence details for every vehicle in the family, including commonly-used part numbers, torque specs, and other handy info. I use a different app to record what was done, along with pictures of receipts.

My filter housing drain plug is so tight I just use that for removal of the whole thing. Minor spillage, which I catch with the drain pan. Am I the only one?

I simply reset the light. I really don't use the Toyota app.

Aftermarket engine oil filter canister cap made by Jowett Performance. With the optional Fumoto valve in the bottom of it for easy oil draining prior to removal. These caps are hard to get now. I got mine about 4.5 years ago. Though I saw a few posts several months ago that Jowett was making another run of them.

When do these Toyota sales happen, and are they applicable to all Toyota dealers, or just yours? I already stocked up on oil filters, but I'm gonna need a backstock of engine air filters...plus more oil filters. I'm not as prepared as you appear to be, but I generally have no less than 2-3 oil changes worth of backstock (oil plus all filters) in my garage inventory for every vehicle my wife and I own plus my boys' vehicles.

I'm far more likely to change the oil at 3-4k miles than I am to do these 10-25k miles OCIs that the boutique oil buyers like to do. If I end up wasting a little money on oil in the long run, I'm ok with that.

I remove the oil cap under the hood before draining the oil below; someone told me it helped drain quicker, not sure if true.

The fumoto valve makes a big difference in cleanliness. I recently got the F133N, larger opening and nipple for a hose, after using the F103 in a few different vehicles for years. Can't say I notice it draining any faster, but being able to run the drain hose directly into a sealed oil pan is great.

I was too cheap to buy the Motivex kit but found similar items on Az that are working well so far.

So I guess my first question is should o install two fumoto valves…..one on the actual oil filter cartridge and one for the oil pan? Or does it all drain from the same place?

I don't know that you could install a Fumoto valve on the oil filter housing that comes from the factory. However, there is an aftermarket billet oil filter housing that has a Fumoto valve built in. I think it was posted as a reply earlier in this thread, yeah....see reply #35.

Until my last oil change I thought I was a master at doing it myself.

I didn't get the new rubber gasket into the correct groove of the filter housing and oil leaked everywhere.

    Thank you for the link.

My daughter’s fiancé owns a shop. I watched him do the oil change. Sorry for the probably silly question. Is the fitting and rubber hose (see pic) take the place of the plastic piece that comes with the Toyota filter to drain the housing it’s in? It has threads and the plastic piece just appeared to snap in.

Yes, the tool you show threads in using the threads for the plug that's normally there. Then you screw the knurled part in to push the ball up and drain the oil. I only screw the knurled part in just far enough to get the oil to drain so as not to overcompress the spring.

Ya gotta watch for the sales. The last one was two months or so ago. There's often a "heads up" here at Tundras.com. And don't confuse yourself on my stash. It's not purely Tundra. But also Highlander (2017) and Venza (2009). Most of my T-100 filters are in a closet in another other room (ran out of shelf space!).

I just ordered one of those. Along with a Fumoto for the pan. And a screw-in funnel. I also bought ramps, a six pack of filters, and I subscribed for Amazon to send me the oil I need every four months. Gonna buy a creeper too.

I'm done letting total strangers touch my truck, after the last apes either lost or stole my skid pan.

For oil, if Costco is close and you are a member, roughly twice a year they run discount on their own brand oil, which I think is Mobil 1 private labeled.
Right now for a box of two 5qt is roughly $30.xx after $8 discount, I usually stock 3 cases, and it should last me for Tundra + Pilot until the next sale, and I might skip one if I overstock, or my fiend would buy it from me.

Appreciate this thread, as I'm planning to start changing my own oil. I grew up helping my dad change the oil (and other maintenance / repairs) on our family vehicles, but I've fallen into the habit of dropping off my vehicles at dealerships for routine maintenance. I'm trying to take back more of what I can do on my own, hoping to learn and teach my own sons to be more self-sufficient and to understand more of the mechanics of a vehicle.

I've purchased a creeper, the screw-on funnel and drain valves mentioned in this thread, and I purchased a set of 5 OEM oil filters. -- My question is about oil and its shelf life. I'm told my 2014 Tundra will take around 7.5 quarts of oil, so buying the Costco Kirkland brand synthetic would mean getting 20 quarts for $63.99. (From iantung's post above, it sounds like it's $4 cheaper in the warehouse to get the same amount, so I may choose that route rather than ordering online.) -- What is the shelf life on this oil; is it fine to sit on a shelf for 6 to 9 months in between oil changes? What about storing it outside in the dry heat of Nevada / Arizona? -- Also, I have a 2010 Lexus RX 350, and I'm wondering if there's any reason not to use that same oil for that engine.

I m in Houston, and I store those in the garage, either on shelf or in the black/yellow plastic tubs.
Warehouse is cheaper than online, but for some if there's no warehouse in the reasonable area, online is an option as it gets to your door, just more bucks...
As for shelf life, I don't think it would matter unless you stock 20 cans at a time and sit on it.
I usually stock three boxes, 6 cans. Tundra takes ~8qt (7.5-8.5qt for whatever everyone else says) and Pilot takes 5qt
So 3 boxes usually last me two changes each.
Oh, wife just texted, looks like I have to up the parts department for more parts/oil/whatever the hell I need to do what she wants....great....:annoyed:

Kirkland oil is made by Warren, a private-label blender who makes oil for TONS of house brand oils. It's perfectly good oil and meets all the specs I need including API and ILSAC. Just check the back of the bottle. For the price, you cannot beat Kirkland. You can even buy without a Costco membership if that's the way you roll.
