    Hello,

New to this forum, haven't looked around a whole lot on here and dont have any specific questions to ask, so i figured make a post in this general forum.

So, I'm looking to buy a 1st gen tundra double cab 4x4 to use as a light duty truck and have a removable overland setup in the back for me, my girlfriend and my dog to go on trips with.

Basically just looking for tips and pointers to watch for and also any recommendations to get a little better performance out of it for the overland side of things making it handle and perform better. Not expecting a race truck and don't have interest in lifting it, mostly looking at just leveling it and throwing a new set of wheels and some good all terrains with some Helper bags in the rear(help with heavier loads)

Any tips, suggested upgrades, anything would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

Welcome to the forum, don't be a stranger, and don't be shy about asking questions. We know the search isn't the easiest to muddle through

BUT WAIT! If you are searching, use some of the settings to your advantage to narrow searches:
    1. Put in your search phrase
    2. [Optional] If you recall or know the member who might've posted the info you're hunting, start typing their nickname here, then click on it when it pops up.
    3. This is the most important: Checking this box will limit your results only to the subforum you're sitting in when using the search, so my advice is to always go into the 1st Gen forum specifically and use this checkbox when searching.
Bonus: The default search results list will give you every individual reply containing the search phrase you entered. That can produce dozens of results inside a single thread. The checkbox under "Search in this forum only" will show each individual thread that has a reply with your keyword(s).

    Welcome from CA!

Until I got my '19 about 10 months ago my 1st gen served me VERY well for 7 years... Towing, not exactly overlanding but quite a bit of desert exploring. Great trucks.

I bought mine from my father in law so I knew it had been meticulously maintained. You want service records, the big thing on first gens is that the timing belt is done every 90K.

Frame rust is a known issue, so check for that especially if lived in the snow belt for any period of it's life.

I put Bilstein 5100's on mine, middle setting so not quite level, but it was advised to me that it's best not to use the top setting on the first gens. They ride a little stiffer, but not in a harsh or bad way.

Hello, yes I was looking through the forum here made for first time buyers last night lots of super good information there. I definitely feel better about knowing what to look for and sadly I know the truck is most likely gonna have some rust on the frame :( living in wisconsin will do that but when I get it I don't plan on driving it in the winter if I can avoid it otherwise I'm gonna get it fully undercoated and give her a regular bath to keep salt from building up

Otherwise beautiful truck you got I know I'll tow with mine too but I don't need to pull anything heavy with it just want something to make trips with to go mountain biking and camping with. Also the bilstein 5100s are most likely the route I'll go with mine if what I get didn't already have them installed.
