Rust on hitch

I noticed I have rust on my hitch and seems to be getting worse. Is this covered under warranty or is it not a huge deal and just spray some rustoleum on it? Truck is 1 year old, I tow my travel trailer with it.

If you use your hitch that's going to happen and it's not a big deal. If you are concerned, you can coat the inside with Fluid Film to protect it.

The only part that looks odd to me is this area. The rust there looks fairly deep already. Do you live in a state where they salt the roads a lot?

 

Alright. Cool thanks guys. Yeah I do live in the northeast. I'll throw some spray or fluid film on there. Just wanted to make sure.

 

Living in the Northeast I definitely recommend protecting your truck from the salt and not just the hitch. If you aren't familiar with Fluid Film, watch some videos on YouTube. Easy to apply once a year.

 

Just buy a hitch cap, I have one that says Toyota on it (cannot find it right now LOL) made of black plastic, paid about $12

 

Doesn't look too bad, but I would gently sand the corrosion off by hand and use some kind of rustproof coating. I used Amsoil when I lived up north and it worked well on my Lexus which looked like it rolled off the showroom floor despite being 22 years old.

I moved to Houston from Toronto recently, super thankful this likely won't be an issue down here!

 

problem with that is if any moisture gets trapped in there, especially salty water from the roads in the winter, it'll be worse!

 

Living in South Florida we deal with rust on everything. I would start with a wire brush to clean the area. I use a product called OSPHO which is a rust converter. It works great in stopping the rust and can be found on Amazon or your local auto paint shop. This product does not repair the area, but rather stops it from getting worse leaving the area black. After coating with this I use rust oleum over the area to have a uniform color on the hitch.

Trapped moisture.
It's an open-ended tube..



And the plug is ribbed for her pleasure..
Plenty of air flow for evaporation..

 

The last thing in the world I would do is use sandpaper or a wire brush on it. FFS, just don't.

Fluid Film or similar is a good suggestion to slow the spread.

 

The wire brush is to get rid of the existing loose rust before treating it with a protective rust encapsulator or converter paint. That’s what I’d do and it works perfectly.

Wire brush/light sanding off surface rust. Spot clean. Por15 (had on hand). CorrosionFree during fall application.

Looks better than new.
