Tailgate doesn't lock; should it?

I ordered a new Decked pickup bed drawer system for my 2021 1794 Edition and I noticed today that when the truck is locked, I can still open up my canopy and drop the tailgate.

Seems that the tailgate should lock as well with the door locks, but it doesn't.

I see a key lock on it, but the dealer never gave me anything other than the single key fob with the hidden key. They were supposed to get me an extra. Guess I better light a fire under them.

Truck is a certified Toyota vehicle so will be covered under warranty.

    Edited:

I saw that these trucks actually don't come standard with a locking tailgate. I assumed mine came with it since it has literally every single other option on it.

But if it doesn't... Since I only have the fob and no normal keys, does this mean I can't manually lock the tailgate until the dealer gets me a key?

Just order up an OE Tailgate Lock. It'll lock/unlock the tailgate w/the fob or lock switches inside the truck; install is not too bad...

    PK3B6-34JS0

.... should set you back about $120-$140 from the dealer.

Key to the tailgate is attached to the fob.

The previous two posts completely and thoroughly answered your question. The auto-tailgate lock is pretty easy to install. I installed mine with an aftermarket kit and love it. Pop a Lock, I think was the name of it.

    This.

I just did the auto lock (OEM dealer purchase) install a couple weeks ago. Really easy (minimal tools and time needed). I do recommend a 1-2' piece of electric fence type wire for fishing the harness through the bottom of the tailgate.

As already posted, you do have a locking tailgate and it can be locked with the fob key. You can have another key cut if you want or wait for the dealer if they have agrfeed to that. You can also install, as already posted, an electric lock if you want.

If you only have one fob though, my first suggestion is to get another ASAP.

If you have a camper shell, once you install the remote tailgate lock, you can also install a remote lock for the shell. My leer topper and tailgate both lock with my fob.

This is only true with the single handle lock. I purposely ordered mine with the two side locks after having ongoing adjustment issues with my previous topper with the single center lock.

Yes, definitely true, I originally was going to order the two side locks because of its more rugged design but I wanted to be able to lock it remotely so went with the the center lock. It does take some adjusting to get it perfect but mine has been pretty good, maybe readjust it a couple times a year so it shuts perfectly. Sometimes when it stops closing perfect it can also be due to the shell it self moving slightly, Ive also had to readjust the shell a couple times since I've had it (4 years).

I installed the oem tailgate lock kit today. It wasn't bad. Worst part was zip tying the long harness. I used plenty of the included zip ties and still did not use them all. I made a fish tape (out of a piece of heavy wire to pull the tailgate wire through the tailgate. Worked like a charm. I also used the oem instuctions that I found on this site. I will attach them again. I had a silver sharpie on hand which I used to mark the two locations of the camera wire leaving the bed and entering the tailgate. The job is much easier than it sounds.

You could always go the DIY lock way. It’s about $20 and gives you a reason to tinker in the garage for a few hours.

The Stock OEM kit listed above really is the best way to go and super easy to install and works with your current key fob and key. I have it on mine and installed it myself super simple.
