05 Limited slip differential fluid change

Looking to change the rear diff fluid on my 05 that has the LSD sticker. It has 80K and has probably never been done. The manual appears to call for 3.12 quarts of 80W-90 or SAE90. What do some of you recommend? Having trouble finding SAE90. Can I get GL-5 gear oil from the Toyota dealership? Is Pennzoil, Valvoline or Mobil1 good?

 

Lucas 80w90. Trust me. Been there, done that, blew a lot of money.

And as far as 'how much', take off the fill plug first. Then the drain plug. Drain everything. Reinstall drain plug and torque to spec. Pump into the fill plug until it's overflowing. Most fluid websites will tell you how much for your specific vehicle.

 

And one of these makes the job easier also, though I'm not sure this works with the gallon bottles shown. Slippery Pete probably has a gallon pump too. This one is for quart bottles, which are more readily available in my area.

Last time I used this transfer pump from Harbor Freight...it moves 5x as much fluid per pump than yours (I have that one too).

 

Thanks for this. I had one that pumped way more fluid, but I lost the damn thing when we remodeled our basement, which forced me to downsize my shop space to a 7x7x10 area. I ended up having to buy the Slippery Pete unit in a pinch and while it worked, I found what you just described: My old pump (which was also probably from HF, impulse buy or freebie) pumped several times more. Only mine still looked like the Slippery Pete unit. I have a pump like the one you pictured also. I use it for PS & similar reservoirs.

 

Shifty, i'm doing this job. I have 4 quarts of Lucas 80W-90 (and the slippery pete pump). The bottle says it's good for limited slip differentials. Have you logged some miles on this stuff without issue? Also, I'm going to do 3 full bottles and then pump the fourth until it's overflowing out the fill hole correct?

 

Yes, I have logged miles. And so have plenty of others who ragged on me about not starting with Lucas 80w90 There is absolutely nothing to be concerned about.

Let me put it to you this way: Within 1-2 days and a couple dozen miles, I *knew* the Mobil1 synthetics weren't right, lots of chatter when backing up cold and turning the wheels, sometimes when pulling forward slow and turning. Over the course of weeks, I played with adding slip additive, a few ounces at a time. It got a little better each time, but honestly, slip additive (IMO) is one of those things that, you don't want too much slip, so once I got up to 6, 7oz or more, I was pretty much like "F this", drained it, contacted Mobil1 for a refund, and put in the Lucas 80w90. Within 1 drive, all chatter was gone.

 

Good to hear. Thanks for the information. I got it done and greased the drive shaft. Drove it 50 miles it sounds good. How often do I have to do the rear diff fluid?

Near the top of the 1st reply on this thread, you'll see a bunch of links to helpful docs. 5th line, I think. The 'Maintenance Info' link (points here) where you'll find a copy of the Owner's Manual, which has maintenance info inside, but also points to the Scheduled Maintenance Guide.

I think that should give you what you need.

 

I did find it and the maintenance schedule for the 1st gen Tundras. I appreciate all the help and info. I have made it through 98 pages of the first gen forum. Lot of good information here.

Not if you use the correct fluid, and your truck is a 2000-2006 (or up to ‘07 Sequoia) …. Because this is the 1st gen subforum. If you have a 2015, you’re asking in the wrong place. If you have a newer truck, consult your manual or the proper forum for your year.

 

Do I need LSD additive?

 

I feel like I’m on LSD at this point. But yeah, my last reply answers that question, again. Basically … Not if you use the correct fluid, assuming you have an LSD rear. More info above.

If you have a 2000-2006 and have the LSD sticker on the back of your rear diff on the same side as the fill plug, stick with dino Lucas 80w90 or Motul 90w and you’ll be fine and shouldn’t need additive, unless things are worn out. If you don’t feel chatter (which you shouldn’t), no need for additive.

If after changing fluid. You suddenly start feeling almost like a skipping sensation when backing out of a parking space while turning, out of a garage while turning, or turning out of a full stop, that’s chatter. If you used these fluids I mention and you have that sensation, which some on here have (a couple at least), your rear end may be worn. Slip additive will tie you over for the time being.

I may add “Dino” (as in “dinosaur”) is referring to the kind of gear oil which is derived from crude oil. Basically, our LSD’s dislike the synthetic stuff. Some have had luck with it, but most have suffered the shutters. Stick to non-synthetic 80w90 gear oil specific for LSD’s. No addictives necessary as they’re already in the LSD specific oil. Like others have said LUCAS is a good choice. (I personally use it as well) Call and ask around as it’s usually not carried in larger quantities at most chain stores. We need 4 bottles.

 

I have logged about 3K on my truck since changing diff fluid. The driveline is quite and smooth. Owned the truck for about 6 months now and 6K. So far so good.

 

Amsoil was the only synthetic that didn’t cause me chatter.
Just do interval changes sooner with the Dino oil, I like knowing the condition of my fluid anyways
